On the afternoon of November 7, along the coastal road in Nhon Ly fishing village, there were still rocks weighing hundreds of kilograms thrown onto the shore by the rolling waves from underwater. The night before, when storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi) made landfall, waves as high as multi-story buildings crashed into the residential area, swallowing many houses.

Waves tens of meters high, engulfing many houses at the same time

While digging through the rubble of his house, Vo Van Tung could not forget the fierce waves that hit his house the night storm Kalmaegi hit.

"I have been at sea since I was a child and have experienced many big waves offshore, but I have never seen one as terrifying as last night. Around dusk, the wind started to blow hard and the waves crashed continuously. The south wind and waves tens of meters high destroyed my house," said Mr. Tung, bewildered.

He assessed that although Typhoon Kalmaegi did not bring heavy rain, its wind and waves were much stronger than previous storms.

Now, Tung and his wife have to move their belongings and live temporarily with relatives. He reluctantly picks up the remaining pieces and belongings. "Use whatever is usable. When the sea calms down in a few days, we can go fishing to earn money to live," Tung said bitterly.

Not only Mr. Tung, the experienced old fisherman Mr. Ho Van Sau, now 70 years old, felt for the first time the terrible destructive power of the waves of storm Kalmaegi.

Mr. Sau was born and raised in this fishing village. Every year he experiences many big and small storms, but he said this time he truly understood the power of the storm from the ocean.

From the morning of November 6, she moved some belongings to a relative's house in the upper neighborhood to stay through the storm. When she returned home the next morning, Mrs. Lanh was met with a pile of rubble.

"When I got home and saw this scene, I stood still for a long time, my limbs were weak, my heart was pounding. The bed, the wardrobe were all in ruins. Now I have nothing left," Mrs. Lanh sobbed.

Tonight, Mrs. Lanh had to stay at her relatives’ house because she had no home. Because she was old and weak, many young men in the village came to help her clean up the pile of bricks and stones.
