China To set an example of integrity for her grandson, 71-year-old Mrs. Tung washed dishes for 12 years to contribute money to pay off the $87,000 debt on behalf of her deceased son.
Ms. Song Huiyu, from Rugao City, Jiangsu Province, last month paid off the last 13,000 yuan (US$1,877) of the 600,000 yuan (nearly US$87,000) her son had borrowed, SCMP reported on May 10.

Her son, who runs a home decoration company, borrowed the money to carry out a large project for a partner. However, he fell into debt when the partner canceled the contract and fled. The debt caused conflict between the couple and they decided to divorce.
He died in 2011 due to illness, leaving behind a 6-year-old son. Shortly after, she received a court notice stating that the creditor was suing the boy, demanding that he pay his father’s debt with the inherited property, the house that was mortgaged to the bank.
The couple were not obliged to repay the debt, but they were determined to keep the house for their grandson, so they worked hard to pay for their son. Tung washed dishes at a restaurant for 2,000 yuan ($288) a month, while her husband worked as a porter for the same amount.
Thanks to frugal spending and pensions, they were able to save 3,000 yuan a month to pay off their debts. But in 2016, her husband died in a traffic accident, making it harder to repay the debt.
At that time, someone told Ms. Tung that the statute of limitations for civil judgment enforcement is usually three years and that five years had passed since her son's death, so she did not need to pay the remaining debt. However, Ms. Tung always believed in the principle of "debt must be paid".
"I want to set an example of integrity for my grandson, so that when he grows up, he can contribute to society," Ms. Tung confided about the motivation that made her work hard for 12 years to save money to pay off her son's debt.
Earlier this year, she decided to demolish her old house and turn it over to the government to receive compensation under the state's incentive policy. After receiving 450,000 yuan ($65,000) in compensation, she paid off the remaining debt.

"She may be an ordinary person, but she is a great mother," another commented.
"Hope she gets some good luck now," said a third.
