A few weeks ago, a report emerged that Microsoft plans to release the next-generation Windows client operating system (tentatively called Windows 12) in mid-2024. However, a crucial part is having hardware compatible with this new operating system. Besides producing the operating system, Microsoft also provides computers to run its latest software, according to Neowin.
Microsoft's new Surface line will feature ARM chips with integrated AI compatible with Windows 12.
According to a new report, Microsoft is busy preparing for the next generation of Surface Pro and Laptops (Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6), expected to be announced in the first half of 2024. The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will bring about comprehensive changes.
Microsoft will be launching its first line of Surface Laptops with ARM processors (previously, ARM processors were only available in the Surface Pro line). Sources within Microsoft also confirm that the upcoming computers will have Intel and Qualcomm versions: 14th generation Intel "Meteor Lake" and Snapdragon X Series.
Both Intel and Qualcomm configurations will incorporate dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) to accelerate AI-related tasks. However, Microsoft is expected to focus more on ARM chips, such as those designed for the Windows 12 operating system. These computers will compete with Apple's devices thanks to their powerful performance and long battery life.
In addition to features found in the Surface Pro 9, the Surface Pro 10 also includes changes such as: NFC support for commercial users, a redesigned front-facing camera with a wider lens, new colors, and a dedicated Copilot button.
The Surface Laptop 6 features thinner bezels and rounded corners, two screen sizes, more ports (at least two USB-C, one USB-A, and Surface Connect), and a new tactile trackpad. Additionally, the laptop will have a dedicated Copilot button.
The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 will receive the most attention in 2024, but Microsoft is also working on a new Surface Laptop Go, a successor to the Surface Laptop Studio 2 (expected in 2025). Additionally, Microsoft is testing the idea of expanding the Surface Pro line with an 11-inch model and offering a new Surface Pro/Laptop with the old design and refreshed hardware to commercial customers, according to Windows Central.
