The explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) has affected the broader tech job market, as companies prioritize AI-related roles and leverage it to save costs. Microsoft and others like Meta have hailed AI programming tools as helping speed up the software development process.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has talked about relying on AI-powered engineers to do basic bug fixes and product improvements. Meta has also outsourced some content management to AI over the years.

Last week, Salesforce revealed that its internal use of AI is allowing it to hire less. On a call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer and Operations Officer Robin Washington said Salesforce “has reduced some of its hiring needs.” For example, 500 customer service employees will be moved to different departments, saving $50 million this year.

Salesforce employed about 76,500 people globally as of January 31, including 13,000 salespeople. Earlier this year, the company announced more than 1,000 layoffs, but it has been ramping up hiring for AI, especially in sales.

Meanwhile, it is unclear which positions will be affected by Microsoft's new round of layoffs of more than 300 employees. In the previous round of cuts, the software engineering group was hit hardest.

As of June 2024, the Windows developer had about 228,000 full-time employees, 55% of whom were based in the U.S. As Microsoft and its rivals spend billions of dollars building data centers for AI, the company will continue to rethink its organizational structure to maintain profitability and competitiveness.
