Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động10/05/2023

The movie "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is set in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hanoi, Ha Giang ... and is exclusively broadcast on the global Netflix platform.

Love letter to Vietnam

The film tells the story of Amanda (played by Rachael Leigh Cook) - a travel specialist living in the US. After a sudden breakup with her long-time lover, she decided to follow her boss's suggestion to travel to Vietnam. During this trip, she met Sinh (played by Scott Ly) and had a romantic relationship with this tour guide.

Sinh took the group to many places from the available itinerary to different experiences with the natural beauty and people in Vietnam. A journey to heal the soul, nurture love, enjoy the beauty of culture and cuisine in the intersection between tradition and modernity with a completely new perspective.

The film leaves its mark with beautiful scenes from nature to people, cuisine and culture of each place the characters explore. A love story is cleverly woven into the promotion of the beauty of Vietnamese tourism. The story is just enough, not overwhelming the promotion but not boring either.

The limitation of "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is that the story in the film is considered old-fashioned, bland, without many climaxes, some elements are not standard about weather, geographical distance... However, overall, the film still conveys complete emotions to the audience, highlighting the beauty of nature and Vietnamese people in a duration of more than 1 hour and 36 minutes.

In "A Tourist's Guide to Love", in addition to a bustling Ho Chi Minh City and bustling Ben Thanh Market, the audience can also admire the ancient Hoi An, the quiet My Son Sanctuary and the peaceful Ha Giang countryside. "Vietnam is an extremely beautiful country with diverse landscapes and rich terrain, this is a valuable material for the film title and for the audience" - producer and female lead Rachael Leigh Cook confided.

Rachael Leigh Cook added that this was her first time working in Vietnam and she felt extremely lucky that her work brought her to this country. "We received a lot of support from the government, partners, colleagues, and even the people. I still remember every day, every scene, every different location... All were memorable moments" - Rachael Leigh Cook said.

Quite impressive results

One factor that makes "A Tourist's Guide to Love" special is that in addition to the natural beauty and people of Vietnam, there are also some crew members who are of Vietnamese origin. Vietnamese-American screenwriter Eirene Tran Donahue confided: "My mother is Vietnamese, she met and fell in love with my father in Saigon. I myself have a similar story with my husband in Hanoi. This is what inspired me to write this script. For me, Vietnam is a land of love, joy and countless beauties that I want to share with the world."

Scott Ly - the film's main actor, who is also Vietnamese-American (his father is Vietnamese) - said: "There were many things that came to mind when I read the script of the film about my homeland, which I have loved since I was a child. This is a very new and different experience for me."

Vietnamese actors such as Meritorious Artist Le Thien and Quiin Truc Tran also have many memories with the film crew. Meritorious Artist Le Thien commented that the screenwriter and director had studied deeply about Vietnamese customs and practices. She was most impressed with the two older actors who played the couple. In particular, the British actor was 1.9 m tall but had a joint disease and the scene forced him to sit on the ground. It was very difficult to stand up and then sit down again. However, they still tried their best to do their best.

The efforts in the journey to make "A Tourist's Guide to Love" have helped the film crew reap impressive results when it premiered exclusively on Netflix globally. As of April 21, the work has risen to the No. 1 position in the global top 10 ranking for films (English). As of April 24-30, the film reached 20.92 million viewing hours and entered the top 10 in 89 countries on Netflix, ranking #1 in Canada, Costa Rica, Bulgaria, Finland, South Africa, and Vietnam.

“Promoting tourism through films is a world trend. Although Vietnam is just starting, it is still a good sign for filmmakers and audiences to expect a new genre of films for the Vietnamese market, contributing to spreading the beauty of Vietnam everywhere,” said screenwriter Dong Hoa.
