According to Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, from the Vietnam-Russia Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, Ministry of Defense , dishes that use alcohol as a seasoning can cause alcohol to be detected in breath. For example, some seafood dishes such as steamed fish with beer, beef hot pot with vinegar, beef in wine sauce; and dishes prepared with spirits or wine such as chicken or pork trotters braised in wine.
Although consuming these foods does not affect driving ability, it will still cause alcohol to be detected in the breath, albeit insignificantly. The body will eliminate the alcohol approximately 30 minutes after eating or after drinking plenty of water.
Additionally, a small number of people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or those with auto-alcoholism may also test positive for alcohol in their breath.
Fruit-based alcoholic beverages can also increase blood alcohol levels. Although not classified as alcoholic beverages, they are considered alcoholic drinks, so people should exercise caution.
To avoid having your blood alcohol level inflated even if you haven't consumed alcoholic beverages but only eaten foods containing alcohol, Dr. Hoang recommends resting for 30 minutes after eating, rinsing your mouth, and drinking plenty of water. If the alcohol level still shows a high reading, you can request to rest for another 15 minutes before retesting.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines alcohol units as follows: One alcohol unit is equivalent to 10g of pure ethanol, which is equal to 200ml of beer; 75ml of wine (1 glass); or 25ml of spirits (1 shot). For a healthy adult, the liver typically eliminates one alcohol unit every hour.
In general, experts agree that it's impossible to pinpoint the exact time it takes for alcohol to be eliminated from the body, as it varies from person to person and their eating habits. The best recommendation is to avoid driving after drinking alcohol to prevent risks.
