According to Mr. Rafael, about 1,534 prisoners escaped from the prison during the riot at the prison on December 25, but 150 of them have now been recaptured.
Mozambique is experiencing escalating civil unrest over a disputed general election in October that extended the Frelimo party’s rule. Opposition groups and supporters say the election was rigged.
While Mozambique's police chief blamed protests outside the prison for inciting the riots, Justice Minister Helena Kida insisted the unrest broke out inside the prison and had no connection to the protests outside.
“The ensuing confrontations left 33 people dead and 15 injured in the vicinity of the prison,” Rafael said at a press conference. The identities of those killed and injured are still unclear.
Earlier, on December 24, Mozambican Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda said at least 21 people had died due to unrest after the East African country's Supreme Court on December 23 confirmed the victory of Daniel Chapo - the presidential candidate of the Frelimo party - in the general election last October.
