The "Red Devils" must find a new goalkeeper in the context of Andre Onana's inconsistent performance since joining Old Trafford for 47 million pounds in 2023. Most recently, Onana also suffered a hamstring injury, thereby missing the early stages of the new season, with the Premier League opening match against Arsenal on August 17.
Previously, MU was said to have approached Emiliano Martinez - the 2022 World Cup champion with the Argentina team. However, the price of 40 million pounds offered by Aston Villa forced the Old Trafford club to withdraw.
In that context, John Victor becomes a possible option. According to Goal Brazil , MU is ready to activate the £6 million contract release clause of this goalkeeper. Botafogo is also preparing for Victor's departure by recruiting Matheus Mendes of Atletico Mineiro to replace him.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper impressed during Botafogo's participation at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, being voted man of the match despite the team losing 0-1 to Palmeiras in the round of 16. He also played brilliantly in the 1-0 win over PSG in the group stage.
Victor joined Botafogo from Santos 18 months ago for less than £1m and has helped the Brazilian side win the Serie A and Copa Libertadores double, while also being named in the 2024 Team of the Year for both tournaments.
If the deal is completed, MU hopes Victor will bring the necessary competition for Onana to return to his peak form, or be ready to replace the number 1 position in goal.
