Gary Neville has issued a warning to Manchester United after Altay Bayindir's mistake in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. |
On the evening of August 17, Manchester United suffered a 0-1 defeat to Arsenal in the opening match of the 2025/26 Premier League, when goalkeeper Altay Bayindir made a mistake that led to Riccardo Calafiori's only goal.
Andre Onana, Manchester United's former number one goalkeeper, was surprisingly left out of the squad, further fuelling controversy over the Old Trafford keeper's position. Gary Neville was scathing on Sky Sports : "There is one issue Manchester United cannot ignore, and that is they need a new goalkeeper. I say this categorically, because in my 20 years at Manchester United, I witnessed two periods of dominance with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar in the squad."
"Between those two periods, Manchester United had to use 7-8 different goalkeepers in 6-8 years, and that caused instability. You need a goalkeeper who is consistent, who dominates the 6m area, punches the ball hard and saves to bring points when the defense makes mistakes," the former Manchester United defender did not hesitate to point out the problem.
Neville suggested two potential names for Manchester United: Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) and Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG).
“The reason I think they’re suitable is not because they’re the best goalkeepers in Europe, but because they have big personalities and big personalities. Donnarumma saved the penalty in the Euro 2020 final and looked like a giant. Martinez won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina. They come out with the arrogance and personality of a goalkeeper – something Manchester United need,” he argued.
