After much effort, Russia and Ukraine finally agreed to sit down for direct negotiations – a move that was once expected to open up opportunities for a peaceful solution. However, the results disappointed public opinion. Photo: Sputnik

Not only have the two sides failed to reach a temporary ceasefire agreement for 30 days, but there are also concerns that the war could drag on for many more years. Notably, the option of “fighting while negotiating” has also been proposed, making the prospect of peace even more uncertain. Photo: Reuters

Judging from the specific situation of the negotiations, the positions of Russia and Ukraine are really different. According to the British newspaper The Economist, the 30-day ceasefire proposal put forward by Ukraine was completely unacceptable to Russia. Photo: TASS

Russia's stance was clear: a ceasefire is fine, but Ukrainian troops must withdraw from four eastern Ukrainian provinces. However, these four provinces are of great strategic importance to Ukraine, so Kyiv immediately rejected this request. Photo: TASS

The statement of the Russian representative, Mr. Medinsky, was even more stern. He said that Russia did not really want war, but if necessary, it would fight to the end, no matter how long it took. Illustration photo: Reuters

He even used the 21-year-old war as an example to counter Ukraine, asking how long Ukraine could hold out. Even more dangerously, he also hinted that if Ukraine did not recognize Russia’s control over the four eastern provinces, the next time the Russian army could attack directly to Kharkov and Sumy Oblast — clearly an act of pressure on Ukraine. The talks lasted less than two hours before ending hastily. Although no ceasefire agreement was reached, the two sides did agree on a notable content: to conduct a prisoner exchange on a scale of 1,000 people for 1,000 people - this is the largest exchange since the war broke out. Notably, on the day of the negotiations, Russia and Ukraine also exchanged the bodies of dead soldiers. Russia used the bodies of 909 Ukrainian soldiers to exchange for 34 bodies of Russian soldiers. This huge difference in ratio has given rise to much speculation about the actual number of casualties on both sides. Photo: Sputnik

On the day of the talks, the battlefield was very fierce. The Ukrainian army became particularly active in the Kursk region, deploying infantry units to launch fierce attacks on many Russian positions in the Tetkino area. According to the Ukrinform news agency (Ukraine), in a counter-battery attack, the Ukrainian HIMARS rocket artillery destroyed a 240mm multiple rocket launcher made in North Korea. To prevent Ukraine from gaining the upper hand, the Russian Air Force launched a large-scale airstrike on Ukrainian units that had penetrated Tetkino. Video circulating online showed Russia dropping a large number of high-explosive aviation bombs on areas near the villages of Rzhevka and Atinskoe in Sumy Oblast, where the Ukrainian 225th and 425th Assault Brigades are based. It was from these positions that the Ukrainian army launched artillery attacks on Tetkino, but after the Russian air strikes, these two brigades suffered heavy losses. In addition, Russia also reinforced the “Aida” special forces unit equipped with modern fiber-optic-guided UAVs, showing its intention to completely crush the Ukrainian offensive. Illustrative photo

The war situation in Eastern Ukraine has also become more tense than ever. Online videos show Russia launching many types of heavy weapons, carrying out fierce attacks on the city of Chasiv Yar, with rocket artillery firing like rain. Illustrative photo

Previously, Russian troops had surrounded Ukrainian forces entrenched in the city center, intending to use the tactic of cutting off supplies to wear down the enemy. However, when entering negotiations, Russia switched to a frontal attack. Photo: Top War

According to the Telegram channel “Two Majors”, the Ukrainian defense line in the city center has almost collapsed, the forces have been defeated. The Russian army is currently dividing and surrounding the Ukrainian groups hiding in high-rise buildings, preparing to destroy each group. In addition, Russia has also entered the village of Stupochky in the south of the city and established a strong position in the industrial zone. Photo: Top War

The Russian army's acceleration of the attack on Chasiv Yar is likely aimed at coordinating with the advance in the southwestern salient, thereby creating a siege of Konstantynivka and gaining a greater advantage in the next round of negotiations. Photo: TASS

On the left flank of this salient, Russia also increased the pressure of attack and just appointed Colonel General Valery Solodchuk – the winner of the Kursk front – as Commander of the Central Operational Group, replacing Colonel General Mordvichev. This is considered a move showing that Russia is prioritizing the capture of Pokrovsk and Myrnorad as the main target. Photo: RIA Novosti
to17-anh-gg-maps.png
Judging by the current course of action, after capturing Novoekonomichne and Myrnorad, Russia will advance straight to Razine, even Fedorivka, and finally take Rozhynske, thereby completing the complete encirclement of Pokrovsk. Currently, the Russian army has begun to advance from Malynivka towards the village of Shevchenko Pershe and clear the Ukrainian forces in Myrolyubivka and its outskirts. Photo: Google Maps

However, according to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia's advance is facing significant obstacles as Ukrainian troops are still entrenched in some positions north of Yelyzavetivka. This has stopped Russia's advance towards Novoekonomichne. Photo: Telegram

Therefore, if Russia wants to break the current stalemate, it must quickly capture Myrnorad, thereby forcing Ukrainian forces to withdraw from the remaining defensive positions. Photo: TASS
