Located along the Luoc River, Thuy Loi Commune (Tien Lu) has fertile alluvial soil, suitable for the growth and development of lilies. Every April, farmers here are busy harvesting lilies. Due to the impact of storm No. 3 in 2024, this year's flower crop yield decreased, but in return, the price is good and in high demand.
These days, the pure white color of lilies seems to shine brightly on the fields and gardens in Thuy Loi commune. Growing lilies has brought a good income to many farmers in the commune.
This year, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Hoi's family in Le Chi village planted nearly 4 sao of lilies. Ms. Hoi shared: Previously, my family mainly grew vegetables, which required a lot of labor and high production costs, and unstable income. I and many people in the commune managed to switch to growing flowers with high economic efficiency, mainly lilies. This flower has a short harvest time, usually only concentrated in April of the solar calendar, the consumption market is stable, and traders come to the garden to buy, so I feel very secure in production.
According to growers, this flower variety is quite "difficult", requiring meticulousness from the stage of selecting bulbs, preparing the soil, the plant likes moisture but cannot withstand waterlogging, so high beds must be made for good drainage... The season for planting flower bulbs is usually in August and September, after nearly 2 months the plants will sprout and the flowers will be harvested around April of the following year. To be proactive and save costs, most lily growers self-propagate for the next crop.
According to gardeners, this crop, each sao of trumpet lily produces about 20,000 flowers. After deducting expenses, each household earns 10-13 million VND/sao. Currently, in addition to the local trumpet lily variety, some gardeners have expanded the area of planting "imported trumpet lilies". The new trumpet lily varieties are heat-resistant, have longer stems and larger flower buds, and are harvested later than the local trumpet lily and can be harvested at many times of the year.
Mr. Nguyen The Tuan, in Le Chi village, said: Currently, my family is cultivating 6 sao of imported lilies. This flower variety has many advantages such as: less susceptible to pests and diseases, the plants grow evenly so there is no need to prune or care for the flowers; when planting, just water enough to keep the soil loose and airy, and at the same time provide enough nutrients for the plants to be healthy and resistant to diseases; especially the harvest time is later than that of domestic lilies, so it is easy to sell and has a good price. On average, each sao of imported lilies will yield about 30,000 flowers, sold at an average price of about 1,200 - 1,500 VND/flower, earning a profit of about 20 million after deducting all expenses.
Currently, Thuy Loi commune has about 15 hectares of lily fields, mainly concentrated in Le Chi and Thuy Duong villages. The economic efficiency of flower growing is many times higher than that of rice cultivation and other vegetable crops. Most people grow on a household scale, taking advantage of garden plots or intercropping with other flowers and crops... To improve economic efficiency and affirm the "Thuy Loi lily" brand, local authorities need to coordinate with relevant agencies to organize training courses to transfer experience and flower growing techniques to farmers, gradually forming concentrated flower production areas...
