This Lunar New Year, the small, quiet house of Phung Thi Lien (1990) and Nguyen Hoang Trung (1984, residing in Son Tay, Hanoi ) was filled with the joyful sounds of children. Spring arrived at their doorstep, sparkling in the happy eyes of the couple after many years of waiting for good news.
After 12 years of infertility, Lien and Trung have finally welcomed their child (photo: Provided by the couple).
Married since 2011, like many other couples, they dreamed of a complete and happy home. From their initial hopes, they gradually realized that the path to having children was not easy. Traditional medicine clinics and skilled infertility specialists became their stopping points on their journey to conceive.
In 2017, after traditional Chinese medicine proved ineffective, the couple decided to seek Western medicine in the hope of soon realizing their dream of becoming parents. Examinations revealed that Mr. Trung had weak sperm, and doctors advised them to consider In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). However, after two unsuccessful embryo transfers, their dreams were dashed, leaving them with a deep sense of loss.
Finances have always been a challenge for the family, with Lien working as a factory worker and Trung as a freelancer, resulting in unstable incomes. They save and scrimp on whatever they earn, even borrowing money, all with the sole hope of welcoming a child soon.
In 2020, they decided to continue their IVF journey, but luck still slipped away from them.
For nine long years on their journey to have a child, Lien and her husband have gone through countless ups and downs, trying everything from traditional medicine to Western medicine, experiencing hope followed by disappointment. Despite this, their burning desire to become parents has never faded.
In 2023, through friends' recommendations, the couple learned about the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital. The process of ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval went smoothly for the wife. On the day of embryo handover, the couple were overjoyed when the doctor announced the results: five 5-day-old embryos.
On a summer day in May 2023, Ms. Lien underwent her first embryo transfer, but despite her efforts, luck was not on their side. At the end of 2023, Ms. Lien had a second embryo transfer. The days following the transfer were filled with mixed emotions: anxiety, worry, and anticipation.
When the pregnancy test showed two lines, Ms. Lien was stunned, unable to believe her eyes. A series of questions flooded her mind: "Is it true? Could there be a mistake?" These doubts were only truly dispelled on the 14th day after embryo transfer, with the official beta HCG test results confirming "she was pregnant."
Their happiness was doubled when, during the first ultrasound, the doctor announced that she was carrying twins. Tears streamed down both their faces, not only tears of joy but also a well-deserved reward for the arduous journey they had endured.
After that, every two weeks, Lien and her husband regularly visited the hospital for check-ups, together marking each memorable milestone on their journey to parenthood.
In August 2024, the most special moment arrived. Ms. Lien entered the operating room for a cesarean section, accompanied by her family. The first cries of the two babies, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Anh and Nguyen Ngoc Minh Anh, brought overwhelming happiness, causing the whole family to erupt in emotion. It was not only the most wonderful day in the lives of Mr. Trung and Ms. Lien, but also a sweet ending to a 12-year journey of overcoming countless difficulties and challenges.
Now, gazing at their two children sleeping peacefully in their arms, Lien and Trung feel that "this spring truly holds a special meaning for our family."
