According to Al Jazeera, the US airstrike took place on the night of May 27th in the city of Bandar Abbas, southern Iran. The US military also intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones after detecting threatening behavior.
The US insists this was purely a defensive action, and states that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran remains in effect.
The latest military moves between the two sides come as the US and Iran are maintaining channels of negotiation to seek an agreement to de-escalate conflict in the Middle East.
On May 27, the White House rejected reports from Iran about a draft agreement allegedly being discussed between the two sides. According to Iranian state television (IRIB), the draft included the withdrawal of US forces from areas near Iran and the lifting of the naval blockade of its ports. However, Washington completely denied this.
Earlier, on May 25, the US also conducted airstrikes against Iran. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the targets neutralized included ships deliberately laying mines and a number of missile launch sites that posed a direct threat to the safety of US soldiers in the region.
