Speaking at the seminar on developing green logistics, rapid adaptation, and announcing the FIATA World Congress 2025 on July 9th, Mr. Ngo Sy Hoai stated that Vietnam's wood industry currently ranks 5th in the world in terms of total export value. Furthermore, if only considering high value-added wood products, such as indoor and outdoor furniture, Vietnam's wood export industry ranks 2nd globally, after China.
According to VIFOREST leaders, Vietnam's wood exports have now reached 170 markets worldwide. Of that total, the US, Japan, China, South Korea, and the EU accounted for over 90% of export value.
In particular, the US accounts for nearly 40% of Vietnam's total wood industry export turnover. If the US imports 10 chairs, 4 of them will be "Made in Vietnam".
In fact, the US remains the largest market for Vietnam's wood and forestry product exports. In the first six months of the year, exports of wood and wood products to the US reached $4.38 billion, accounting for 55% of the total export value of the entire industry.
The increase in US imports of Vietnamese timber and wood products indicates a rapid recovery in demand within the country. Wooden furniture, in particular, is a major export item to the US.
Similarly, in the Chinese market, Vietnamese wood and wood products are highly favored, with export turnover exceeding $1 billion in just the first half of 2024. According to the latest statistics from the Chinese Customs Administration, in the first six months of 2024, Vietnam surpassed Thailand to become the third largest supplier of wooden furniture, after Italy and Germany.
According to statistics from the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , in the first six months of 2024, Vietnam's exports of wood and forestry products reached US$7.95 billion, an increase of approximately 21.2% compared to the same period in 2023 and achieving 52.3% of the plan for the whole year. Notably, some key markets for Vietnamese wood and forestry products saw strong growth, such as the US (reaching US$4.38 billion, up 27.6% compared to the same period in 2023) and China (reaching US$1.059 billion, up 46.6%).
