On May 15 (local time), US President Donald Trump, who is currently visiting the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and his host country counterpart Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the inauguration of phase 1 of a new comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) facility with a capacity of 5GW in Abu Dhabi.
According to a VNA correspondent in Washington, this new artificial intelligence facility is the largest outside the United States, housing the headquarters of hyperscale companies and large American enterprises to promote regional computing capacity with the ability to serve the Southern Hemisphere.
The UAE-US AI Facility will include 5GW of capacity for AI data centers in Abu Dhabi, providing a regional platform from which major US data centers can deliver services with optimal latency to nearly half of the global population living within 3,200km of the UAE.
Phase 1 of the project is a 1GW data center.
Once completed, the facility will leverage nuclear, solar and gas power to reduce carbon emissions and will also house a science park that promotes advances in AI innovation.
The facility, covering an area of about 2,500 hectares, will be built and operated by the UAE's leading AI group G42 in collaboration with US partners.
This is an effort based on a new framework for AI Acceleration Partnership between the two countries to further enhance cooperation on AI and advanced technologies.
The new AI framework agreement will spur major investment in advanced semiconductors and data centers in the US and UAE, according to US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
In the UAE, US companies will operate data centers and provide US-managed cloud services across the region. The agreement also includes strong security guarantees to prevent the diversion of US technology.
The UAE is a pioneer in encouraging the adoption of AI in commercial and government activities.
It was the first country to appoint a federal Minister of Artificial Intelligence in 2017 and established the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in 2019./.
