Change 3 important location settings on iPhone immediately to protect personal data

Apple offers a variety of options for iPhone users to specifically limit which apps can track location and when they're allowed to do so, in order to best protect personal data.

Here are 3 important location settings that iPhone users should know.

1. Set the position for the iPhone camera

The iPhone camera can tag photos with location data, a feature known as geotagging. While this can be useful for organizing memories by location, it also poses a privacy risk, especially when users share photos online on Facebook or Instagram.

Anyone who receives a photo embedded with location data can see exactly where the photo was taken, inadvertently revealing the user's home, workplace, or other places they frequently travel to.

To turn this feature off, iPhone users need to go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera, and set it to None or Ask next time or when I share.

2. Location services for applications

Many apps request access to a user's location, but not all of them actually need it to function. Some iPhone apps may use location data for targeted advertising or data collection purposes, even if the iPhone user isn't actively using them.

This can lead to information such as user movements or habits being exposed. To manage, iPhone users go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then review the list of applications.

For each app, decide on one of the following settings: Never, While Using App, or Ask Next Time or When I Share, instead of Always. This helps reduce background tracking and keeps more control in the hands of the user.

3. Important location

Significant Locations keeps a log of places users frequently visit, such as their home, office, or favorite stores.

While this feature is designed to be a convenience, it also means that the iPhone is storing every location and movement of the user, which can feel invasive to those concerned about privacy.

To turn off the feature, iPhone users go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations , and turn it off. Users can also delete their location history on this screen.
