Unusual radio signals, similar to high-energy cosmic rays, have been detected by scientists deep beneath the Antarctic ice. For nearly 20 years, scientists have been trying to figure out what the mysterious signals are. Photo: Shutterstock/Matt Makes Photos. Experts first recorded the mysterious signal in 2006 thanks to a device called ANITA - a special antenna system mounted on a balloon, whose task is to capture radio signals from cosmic rays entering the Earth's atmosphere. Instead of picking up signals from above, ANITA detected a short pulse of radio waves coming from beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, at an angle of up to 30 degrees. Photo: Stephanie Wissel/Penn State. This phenomenon is likened to a “shower of reverse cosmic rays”, completely contrary to the laws of physics as we know it. Photo: BBC/Windafall Films.
After discovering the mysterious signal, scientists are skeptical that this could be the first sign of a previously unknown particle or a natural phenomenon that has not been fully deciphered by humans. Equipped with advanced sensor technology and higher sensitivity, PUEO is expected by experts to help find the exact solution to the mysterious signal emitted from beneath the ice in Antarctica.
