Ho Chi Minh City Bui Khoi Nguyen, grade 5, has a primary school math exam score in the top 1% in the world , according to the UK's international general education program.
Khoi Nguyen, An Binh Primary School, Thu Duc City, was honored at the Pearson Edexcel international general education certificate awarding ceremony for nearly 1,000 students in grades 5, 9, and 11 of the Ho Chi Minh City Departmentof Education and Training on the morning of March 16. These are students following the integrated program at the city's public schools.
Khoi Nguyen said he has never taken extra classes, including English. During class, he focuses on his lessons, then reviews and prepares his lessons in advance to master the knowledge.
"I like Math and Science so I always want to find new ways to solve problems other than the methods teachers teach in class," Khoi Nguyen shared, saying he wants to become a programmer in the future.

Last year, Bui Trong Nguyen - Khoi Nguyen's older brother, also achieved a similar result. Mr. Bui Duc Nguyen, 42 years old, Khoi Nguyen's father, said that the two sons are close in age, both love Math but rarely discuss, usually doing their own homework. The family does not interfere with their children's studies, only giving them a time frame and discipline in their daily life.
After school, Khoi Nguyen plays basketball or soccer. In the evening, he studies for about two hours and goes to bed before 10 p.m. Each week, Khoi Nguyen has two hours to play games, and if he goes over that time, his time will be deducted from the following week. Mr. Nguyen said that Khoi Nguyen is active and dynamic, likes to climb mountains and asks questions about everything around him.
"In third grade, when he heard his mother instructing his older brother to solve math problems, Khoi Nguyen also jumped in to help and has loved math ever since. His mother often asked for fun math problems for him to solve. To be more exact, he played with math, not studied math," said Mr. Nguyen.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that improving English proficiency, teaching Math and Science in English according to international standard programs, with output being certificates recognized worldwide is a focused goal.
"The outstanding achievements that Ho Chi Minh City students have achieved have proven the quality of the integrated English program and the right direction of the city's education sector," said Mr. Hieu.
In the 2022-2023 school year, all primary, secondary and high school students taking the Pearson Edexcel certificate exam will be assessed as passing or above in Mathematics. The percentage of students achieving excellent scores in this subject ranges from 70-86%, depending on the level of study. Particularly at the high school level, 31% of students taking the exam achieved a perfect score (9), much higher than the world average (19%).
In Science and English, almost all high school students passed. The figure for middle school students was 96%.
The project of teaching and learning Math, Science and English integrated according to the national curriculum framework of the UK and Vietnam (also known as the integrated English program) was allowed by the City People's Committee to be implemented in public schools nearly ten years ago, on a voluntary basis.
Students participating in the project will study the Vietnamese curriculum according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and take 8-15 additional lessons per week with foreign teachers, in three subjects: Math, English and Science. Tuition fees range from 3-4 million VND per month.
The program's output standards are Pearson Edexcel certificates called iPrimary (primary), iLowerSecondary (secondary) and International GCSE (high school). To obtain this certificate, students must take exams in three subjects: English, Mathematics and Science in English.
