Lai Ngoc Thang Long is a former student of Duc Tho High School, a school in a mountainous district in the countryside of Ha Tinh . Long's mother is a primary school teacher, his father is a vocational teacher.
Valedictorian of the class, already has a job before graduating
With a cumulative GPA of 3.93/4 and a training score of 95/100, Lai Ngoc Thang Long graduated with honors, ranked top 1 in the computer science major of the 63rd course, and was the valedictorian of this year's Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Long always received the school's A-class scholarship in 10/10 semesters, along with many other scholarships. In early 2023, Long was honored to join the Party ranks while being a senior student.
In addition, Thang Long has achieved many other achievements such as being in the top 10 best students in the field of data science of the Viettel talented student program in 2001; a certificate of merit for excellent teaching assistant achievements from the Principal of the School of Information Technology and Communications in 2022; having a scientific article published at the international conference on intelligent traffic violation detection using deep learning at Eai Iniscom 2022...

"When I found out I was the valedictorian of the entire class, I was overwhelmed with joy. This is a precious gift I give to my family and relatives.
In the near future, I will also be honored at the Hanoi City valedictorian award ceremony in 2023. This result partly rewards my efforts," Long said.
Also according to Long, in 2018, when taking the university entrance exam, he was not too dreamy, he just wished to pass a major related to information technology.
That year, the first year of the computer science department of the Polytechnic University opened, I boldly registered.
The benchmark for this major is "huge" compared to other majors, but I was lucky to pass and was awarded a certificate of merit by the school for my excellent performance in the high school graduation exam that year.
Having passed the university entrance exam with his favorite major, Long determined that he only needed to "pass the subjects" in the next semesters to be lucky.
However, the first semester's results of being at the top of the faculty made Long feel like he had been injected with a dose of "doping", making him very happy.
"Ah, it turns out I'm not inferior to my friends from the city, those who had high achievements or excellent awards in high school," the student said to himself and set a higher goal, which was to graduate from university with a good degree.
After many semesters with a maximum score of 4.0, he was sure to have a good degree in hand. In his third year of study, Long was accepted as an official employee by Viettel Group with an attractive salary compared to students in school.
In his fourth year, Long continued to apply for a fairly important position at a bank and was accepted as an official employee without having a university degree.

Valedictorian does not study extra
Long is from Duc Dong commune, a former student of Duc Tho High School, a school in a mountainous district in the countryside of Ha Tinh. Long's mother is a primary school teacher, his father is a vocational teacher but he quit his job early due to poor health.
In grades 10 and 12, Long won third prize in the provincial excellent student competition. In his hometown, there was no tutoring center, so if he wanted to study, he had to go to town. That's why Long searched for online courses to study on his own. Unexpectedly, his mother immediately agreed with the words of encouragement, "I believe in you."
With the computer his parents saved up to buy for him, Long diligently studied on his own throughout high school.
"When I first entered the University of Technology, I was overwhelmed because the friends around me had all won national and international awards, or at least came from specialized schools and selective classes.
I started to plan my studies properly, by paying attention to lectures from the beginning and doing homework right after class.
After a few weeks or a month, I review the lessons I have learned and practice the exercises of each subject over and over again before the exam so that the amount of knowledge does not become overloaded and it is easier to get a high score on the exam," Long said.
Sharing about whether studying and working at the same time made him stressed, Long said that at first he was quite stressed, but both fields have the ability to complement each other, so he gradually found a balance. At the same time, while studying, he also took the time to participate in sports, listen to music...

Long's future goal is to work in large corporations to learn expertise, strive to advance in his career and make important contributions to his workplace.
Sharing about the excellent student Lai Ngoc Thang Long, Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, lecturer of computer science, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that although he came from a poor rural area in Ha Tinh with difficult learning conditions, he made great efforts in his studies, was an excellent student for 5 consecutive years with a cumulative GPA of nearly 4.0.
"I worked with student Lai Ngoc Thang Long in the research lab and studied for my engineering graduation project.
During his studies and work under my guidance, Long was always proactive, tried hard, and actively discussed with the lecturer about issues surrounding the subject and proposed solutions.
In addition, I am very active in union activities and social work when I achieved excellent training scores throughout 5 years of study and was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam at Hanoi University of Science and Technology," said Dr. Trung.
According to this lecturer, during his studies, Long always tried to complete his work according to the set plan and submitted periodic reports to ensure progress was completed on time.
I not only look for effective solutions but also ensure feasibility and practical application. These are important and potential qualities for a successful future PhD student.
Dr. Trung also assessed Long's ability to conduct research as an outstanding strength. At the same time, this lecturer also believes that Long can become a researcher, do good work in the future, and make positive contributions to the development of the scientific and technological community.
