Among the four Vietnamese contestants competing in the International Biology Olympiad this year, Nguyen Luong Thai Duy (11th grade Biology student at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted) is the youngest member and won the Gold Medal with a score ranked 7th out of 298 contestants from 81 countries and territories. His result contributed to the overall achievement, helping the Vietnamese team enter the group of 10 countries with the highest total score.
To achieve this result, the male student from Hanoi and other candidates passed 2 days of exams. The first day of the exam included 4 practical and experimental exam rooms (each room lasting 90 minutes), including: Biomedical Sciences; Molecular and Cell Biology; Ecology and Systematics; Microbiology. The second day of the exam was the theoretical part, consisting of 2 exams (each lasting 180 minutes). The exams required candidates to solve a total of 85 questions, revolving around practical global issues such as: Environmental pollution, green growth, carbon neutrality, combating climate change, diagnosing and treating some diseases according to the principles of precision medicine.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Thai Duy said he was very happy and surprised with the results achieved.

Ms. Bui Thi Thu Ha, homeroom teacher and Thai Duy's Biology teacher, said: "I felt excited and happy when I heard 'Vietnam - Nguyen Luong Thai Duy' being called on stage by the organizers to award the Gold Medal. The result made me both emotional and proud because this was the first time Thai Duy participated in this international competition."
Ms. Ha has full confidence in Duy's ability when he was shortlisted to participate in the International Biology Olympiad in 2025 and believes that the result is worthy of his training and efforts over the past time. According to Ms. Ha, Thai Duy is one of the excellent students, showing early talent in Biology and always being at the top of the class, being in the top of the Biology team of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted as well as the Hanoi team participating in the national excellent student competition.
“Thai Duy is very passionate about Biology, eager to learn, works seriously and diligently every day,” said Ms. Ha.
Thai Duy's secret to studying is to always concentrate on listening and taking full notes of the lectures in class. In each class, he identifies the key knowledge and tries to grasp the content. When he gets home, Duy reviews the lessons he has learned and practices more advanced lessons and excellent student exams.
The criteria for studying that I set is: "Learn to what extent, understand clearly and grasp firmly". Every day, I make a specific study plan, divide time reasonably between subjects and spend some time reading more Biology documents on books, newspapers and the Internet. In addition to studying, Duy also cares about maintaining a balance in life. I spend my leisure time listening to music, reading stories, participating in extracurricular activities and clubs,...
With perseverance and clear direction, Duy gradually achieved many positive results in Biology competitions such as: Second prize at the city level for grade 10, First prize at the city level and First prize at the national level for grade 11. This year, before winning the International Olympic Gold Medal, he also won the Silver Medal at the USA Biology Olympiad 2025 (USABO 2025).

In the eyes of many teachers, Thai Duy is an intelligent student, has a high learning spirit, is hard-working and studies all subjects equally, not just Biology. He is also always willing to share documents and support friends in their studies, so he is trusted and loved by teachers and friends.
For Thai Duy, the significance lies not only in the results achieved, but also in the training process with the experiences he has gained. The male student said that he was very happy to have the opportunity to practice with specialized equipment during the recent review process. Because through that, he understood more clearly the knowledge that he had previously only accessed through theoretical lessons. Under the guidance of teachers, he has gradually improved his practical skills.
Sharing about his upcoming plans, Thai Duy said he will try his best to study to make further progress and complete the general education program well. At the same time, he will continue to pursue Biology, gradually finding a suitable specialized direction for this interesting science .
