Enhancing Vietnam's position in the global technology value chain

On July 28, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung attended and spoke at the inauguration ceremony of Coherent Vietnam Factory (Coherent Group, USA) at Nhon Trach 1 Industrial Park, Dong Nai province.

At the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung said that Coherent - one of the world's leading corporations in the field of materials, equipment and components serving the semiconductor and electronics industries - continues to expand its investment activities in Vietnam, opening up many opportunities for extensive cooperation in human resource training, knowledge and technology transfer.

The project will create stable, quality jobs for thousands of highly skilled and technical workers. In particular, the Group's products will directly serve many of the world's leading corporations in the fields of AI and big data, thereby enhancing Vietnam's position in the global technology value chain.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that in 2024, Vietnam will be ranked 44/133 countries and economies in the global innovation index, up 2 places compared to 2023 and is the only country that has always had innovation results higher than its development level over the past 14 years.

“Vietnam is becoming a “strategic base” for the world's leading technology corporations such as NVIDIA, Apple, Google, Qualcomm, Amkor, Marvell, Intel, Meta... and today, Coherent,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that in the coming time, Coherent Group continue to expand its investment in depth in Vietnam, especially in stages with higher added value in the semiconductor industry value chain; pay attention to training and using high-quality human resources in Vietnam, strengthen connections with research institutes and universities to form a comprehensive and sustainable innovation ecosystem; research and establish representative offices, R&D centers as well as labs and experimental production facilities at NIC and high-tech parks in Vietnam.

The Government pledges to always accompany and create favorable conditions for domestic and foreign investors to invest effectively, sustainably and long-term in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Gan YC, Director of Coherent Factory in Nhon Trach 1 Industrial Park, the Factory plays a key role in accelerating Coherent Group's capabilities in silicon carbide and optics - essential elements for the transformation of industrial systems, high-speed communications and data center infrastructure.

With smart manufacturing systems and high-quality local human resources, the Factory helps strengthen the supply chain, shorten delivery times, and more effectively access key markets in Asia. This is not just a factory but a strategic platform for innovation, growth and long-term sustainable competitiveness.

According to Coherent Group, in response to the need to expand the high-tech sector, the Group is implementing a plan to invest in a factory in Nhon Trach 1 Industrial Park with a total initial investment of 127 million USD.

The plant manufactures Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductors, glass and advanced optical devices.

Previously, on October 31, 2023, Coherent Group proposed investing in three high-tech projects in Nhon Trach Industrial Park 1 and 2.

The projects include: Silicon Carbide (SiC) Semiconductor Manufacturing Project; Advanced Optics Project and M-Cubed Project: Measurement, testing and manufacturing of semiconductor components.

The total initial registered investment capital of these three projects is nearly 1 billion USD, with the expectation of achieving a production value of more than 1.2 billion USD per year.

In 2024, Dong Nai province granted investment certificates to three projects of Coherent Group./.
