According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the temperature measured at stations in the Northwest region and the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen at 1:00 p.m. today, May 6, was commonly 37 - 40 degrees Celsius, with some places above 41 degrees Celsius such as: Lac Son district ( Hoa Binh ) 41.7 degrees Celsius; Hoi Xuan town (Quan Hoa district, Thanh Hoa) 42.4 degrees Celsius; Quy Chau district (Nghe An) 42 degrees Celsius; Tay Hieu commune (Thai Hoa town, Nghe An) 42.5 degrees Celsius; Huong Khe district ( Ha Tinh ) 41.3 degrees Celsius... Relative humidity at 1:00 p.m. was commonly 33 - 55%.

Notably, this heat wave has set a new record for the highest temperature in Vietnam.
On April 20, 2019, the meteorological station in Huong Khe district measured a temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius - the highest temperature ever recorded in Vietnam. However, at 4:00 p.m. this afternoon, May 6, this record was broken. Accordingly, the meteorological station in Hoi Xuan town measured a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature of the day was over 44.1 degrees Celsius.
Cold air flows down to the North
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that a cold air mass is currently moving south from the North. Around the night of May 7 and May 8, this cold air mass will affect the northeastern and north central regions, then affect some areas in the northwest.
On the day and night of May 8, the Northeast and Thanh Hoa will have cool weather. During this cold air mass, the lowest temperature in the Northeast will generally be 22 - 25 degrees Celsius, and in mountainous areas, it will be below 22 degrees Celsius.
Due to the influence of cold air, from the evening and night of May 7-8, the North and North Central regions will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall from 20-40 mm, some places over 60 mm.
From May 8, from Quang Binh to Thua Thien - Hue, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms; locally there will be moderate to heavy rain with rainfall of 10 - 30 mm, in some places over 50 mm.
In addition, from May 8, in the Central Highlands and the South, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms (storms will occur in the afternoon and evening), locally with moderate to heavy rain with rainfall of 10 - 30 mm, in some places over 50 mm. During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
Thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds can affect agricultural production, cause trees to fall, damage houses, traffic works and infrastructure.
Localized heavy rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas. Strong winds and large waves at sea may affect boating and other activities.
