From individual production to the power of collective economy
In the past, agriculture in Lang Son was mainly characterized by small-scale, fragmented household production. This production method created many barriers in terms of productivity, uneven quality and especially limited market access.
Recognizing these challenges, the Provincial Farmers' Association has taken drastic action, actively mobilizing and guiding farmers to change their mindset, and link production to form cooperatives.
Dry extract production is a traditional handicraft of the people of Yen Phuc commune, supported by farmers' associations at all levels. In 2020, Mr. Ly Anh Tuan and 15 members joined together and established the Cho Bai Dry Extract Cooperative, Yen Phuc commune.
No longer limited to manual methods, the cooperative has boldly invested in modern machinery in key production stages such as: grinding flour, coating rice paper and cutting noodles. This change has created a revolution in productivity, helping to increase output many times over, while freeing up labor for the people.
“Our aspiration is to bring Lang Son agricultural products not only to the national level but also to conquer demanding markets around the world, contributing to helping farmers become sustainably rich.” Mr. Hoang Van Ngon - Chairman of Provincial Farmers' Association |
If before, a family could only produce 30kg of rice per day by hand, now with the support of machines in many stages, this number has skyrocketed to 500kg of rice per day.
Mr. Ly Anh Tuan, Director of Cho Bai Dry Rice Cooperative, shared: Joining the cooperative helps us no longer produce individually. We invest in technology together, learn from experience together and, more importantly, build brands and expand markets together. Thanks to that, our products have better quality, are more stable and are known by many people inside and outside Lang Son province.
Journey to conquer the market
Reorganizing production is just the first step. For agricultural products to really "take off", the Provincial Farmers' Association and departments and branches have made constant efforts to build geographical indications, collective brands, and especially bring key products to OCOP certification.
In 2020, with the support of the Farmers' Association and local authorities, Mr. Nong Van Tu's family in Yen Phuc commune received support of over 220 million VND from the State to develop star anise essential oil into an OCOP product.
Under the dedicated guidance of the association and the relevant departments, Mr. Tu completed the dossier and was supported in designing a professional brand identity including logo, packaging, traceability stamp, website and advanced quality management certification. His tireless efforts were rewarded when his star anise essential oil product was honored with a 3-star OCOP certification.
The OCOP ticket has become a "passport", helping Mr. Tu's star anise essential oil products not only become widely known to domestic consumers but also open the door to demanding export markets.
Currently, the product is available in China, the US, Belgium, the Netherlands, Thailand, India and Eastern European countries. Prestigious recognitions such as "High-quality product title loved by consumers in 2022" and being in the "Top 50 Golden Star products of Vietnam in 2024" have continued to affirm the brand's position.
Like star anise essential oil products, honey products of Quang Hong Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative in Luong Van Tri ward are also increasingly known by many consumers.
Mr. Hoang Van Cuong, Quang Hong Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative said: With support from the officials of the Farmers' Association of Quang Lac Commune (formerly), now Luong Van Tri Ward, in establishing a cooperative for development, in 2017, I and 7 other members in the area together established Quang Hong Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative.
“We built this honey brand together because the area has ivy trees, which produce delicious honey. By 2024, our two products have been rated OCOP stars, making it easier for the products to be put on e-commerce sites and sold on digital platforms,” Mr. Cuong added.
Not only that, to support members and agricultural product owners, recently, farmers' associations at all levels in the province have also supported bringing products to participate in trade promotion programs...inside and outside the province.
Aspirations in the new era
Talking to us, Mr. Hoang Van Ngon, Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association emphasized: Regarding the orientation in the coming period, the Provincial Farmers' Association will continue to accompany farmers and members in reorganizing production towards linking value chains, improving product quality and promoting the application of science and technology.
The image of Lang Son farmers increasingly confidently standing next to high-quality agricultural products made by their own hands, with eyes shining with faith and aspiration to rise up, has affirmed the indispensable role of the Provincial Farmers' Association.
Since July 1, Lang Son has merged 194 commune-level administrative units into 65 administrative units. The Provincial Farmers' Association and the Farmers' Associations of 65 new communes and wards are also actively developing working regulations for the Executive Committee, assigning tasks to the Standing Committee leaders, cadres and civil servants in charge of the area, issuing programs and work plans to implement in the last 6 months of 2025. Along with that, the association's activities from propaganda, guidance, capital, technology transfer, etc. are still being implemented methodically and smoothly to farmer members in the area.
It can be seen that the activities of the Farmers' Association of Lang Son province are an important catalyst, a solid foundation for farmers and farmer members to develop. From there, it has contributed to the Party, government and people to bring Lang Son firmly into a new era - the era of national development.
