How a range hood works

A range hood works by drawing smoke, steam, grease, and unpleasant odors out of the cooking space and removing them or expelling them outside the kitchen. The operation of a range hood typically follows these steps:

Air and odor extraction: The range hood's motor generates suction, drawing air from the cooking space through a filter.

Air filtration: During passage through the filter, smoke, grease, and water vapor are removed. Filters may include grease filters to absorb grease and activated carbon filters to remove unpleasant odors.

Air direction: The cleaned air continues through the duct system. If there is an exhaust duct, the air will be expelled from the house through the ventilation duct. In the absence of an exhaust duct, the machine can recirculate the air in the kitchen space by re-filtering the air and releasing it back into the cooking area.

Kitchen range hoods play a crucial role in filtering kitchen air, protecting people from the health risks caused by cooking fumes. However, many people still don't know how to use a range hood effectively. Some choose to keep windows tightly closed when using the range hood, while others choose to leave them open. So, which is the correct way?

Should you open the window while the range hood is on?

When the range hood is turned on, if the doors and windows are open, a large amount of outside air will rush in, disrupting the negative pressure zone created by the range hood, preventing the smoke from being effectively drawn out and causing it to spread throughout the kitchen more quickly.

However, if doors and windows are sealed shut, it's also not conducive to the removal of oil fumes. Therefore, the most effective approach is to close the windows but leave a gap of about 3-10 cm to allow for normal air circulation, enabling the range hood to operate most efficiently.

If you're simply boiling water or cooking porridge, you can leave the doors and windows open, but you must keep the range hood on throughout the cooking process. After turning off the stove, continue running the range hood for another 1-3 minutes before turning it off.

You should leave a gap of about 3-10 cm to allow for normal air circulation, enabling the range hood to operate most effectively.

The installation location of a range hood significantly affects its performance. Generally, range hoods should be installed 65-75 cm away from the stovetop. This position ensures efficient operation while preventing problems such as head bumps when standing and cooking. You should also install the range hood in the center of the kitchen, avoiding corners.

Cleaning the range hood without disassembly.

Before you start cleaning your range hood, you need to prepare the necessary tools and cleaning agents such as a soft cloth or sponge, warm water, a mild cleaning solution (diluted dish soap can be used), a soft brush, and a large tray (to soak the filter if needed).

First, use a soft cloth dampened with warm water to gently wipe the outer surface of the range hood. For stubborn stains, you can use a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid using strong detergents or sharp objects, as these can scratch the surface of the appliance.

If your range hood has a removable filter, take it out and soak it in warm water with a little detergent. Use a soft brush to remove grease and dirt from the filter, then let it dry completely before reassembling. If the filter is not removable, you can clean it with a soft cloth dampened with warm soapy water.

To clean the inside of the appliance, use a soft, damp sponge to wipe down the inside of the range hood. If there is grease buildup in hard-to-reach places, you can use a soft brush to gently scrub it.

After completing the above steps, check the entire range hood to ensure there is no remaining cleaning solution or water. Wipe it dry with a clean cloth once more to ensure it is completely dry before use.

You should clean your range hood regularly (about once every 1-2 months) to ensure it always works well and lasts longer. Keeping it clean not only helps eliminate unpleasant odors but also keeps your kitchen fresh and airy.
