“Some private tour companies have been following this policy for a long time, but now it is mandatory for all climbers,” said Rakesh Gurung, director of the Nepal government’s tourism department.

“It will help reduce search and rescue time in case of accidents,” Mr. Gurung added.

Everest climbers pay an additional $10 to $15 to have a tracking chip installed in their jackets. They must return the chip after completing their climb.

The chip is manufactured in a European country and connects to satellites using the global positioning system (GPS), Mr. Gurung said.

Mount Everest is 8,849m high, it is the highest mountain in the world and is known as the "roof of the world".

Those who want to conquer Everest must apply for a special climbing permit, which costs up to $11,000. In addition, they must spend nearly $35,000 on equipment, food, oxygen tanks and more.

Eight of the world's 10 highest mountains are located in Nepal, and mountain climbing brings significant tourism revenue to the country.

The journey to conquer Everest can take up to 2 months depending on weather conditions. The most suitable time to participate in this activity is usually from April to May, especially mid-May.

Nepal has issued 478 climbing permits in 2023, including 12 deaths and five missing cases.

Rescue operations on Mount Everest are difficult due to the harsh weather conditions. Many climbers have lost their lives there.
