VnExpressVnExpress01/02/2024

The New Zealand Government is offering 25 full postgraduate scholarships to Vietnamese candidates, down five from last year.

The New Zealand Embassy in Hanoi announced on January 31 that it has opened applications for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship. Applicants are required to submit their applications online, with the deadline being 6am on February 29 (12pm, February 29, New Zealand time).

The scholarships will be awarded to 25 candidates to study in New Zealand in 2025, with priority given to the fields of Climate Change and Environment, Disaster Risk Management; Food Security and Agriculture; Renewable Energy; Public Administration and Economic and Private Sector Resilience.

The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship is open to applicants aged 18 and over, with no age limit but priority given to applicants under 40. Applicants must have lived in Vietnam for the past two years, and have worked 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time in a field related to the intended field of study.

Typically, the English language requirements are IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL 90 (computer-based with a writing score of 21), PTE Academic 58 (no communication band below 50) or Cambridge Academic English (Advanced) 176 (no band below 169). Applicants do not need an English score when applying, but only when they are shortlisted.

PhD applicants are required to find a supervisor at a New Zealand university. If selected for interview, they are required to provide evidence that they have a supervisor or are in discussions with a potential supervisor.

In addition, the online scholarship application system may close early if it receives a large number of applications. Therefore, applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible.

The New Zealand Government Scholarships were launched in 1990 for international students pursuing postgraduate studies. Since then, nearly 400 Vietnamese have received these scholarships.
