Newcastle beat Brighton 4-1 in the make-up match of round 25, increasing the gap with fifth-placed Liverpool to four points.
Newcastle consolidated their third place with 69 points from 36 games. The Magpies are three points ahead of Man Utd and four points ahead of Liverpool. With both Newcastle and Liverpool having two games left to play, Eddie Howe's team only needs to win one of their final two games, against Leicester City and Chelsea, to secure a place in the Premier League's top four and a place in the Champions League.
Brighton had just won 3-0 at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, but could not stand up to Newcastle's pressure. The home team bombarded goalkeeper Jason Steele's goal from the very beginning. In the 22nd minute, after many missed chances, Newcastle opened the scoring. Undav jumped to clear Trippier's corner kick, but headed the ball into his own net.

Newcastle continued to dominate the rest of the first half. Meanwhile, with Alexis MacAllister starting on the bench, Brighton's attack was ineffective. In the 45+4 minute, the home team doubled the gap. Trippier continued to create, kicking a free kick for Dan Burn to head into the visitors' net.
Brighton pulled one back in the 51st minute. Receiving the ball from Gilmour's through ball, Undav broke free and shot past goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The match was a bit more dramatic, but Newcastle were brave enough to defend their victory. In the 89th minute, with a counter-attack on the right wing, the home team decided the match. Receiving a through ball from Almiron, Callum Wilson rushed down and shot past goalkeeper Steele.
Brighton pressed forward to save their hopes, but continued to pay the price against Newcastle's sharp counter-attacks. In the 90+1 minute, Wilson crossed the ball in the penalty area for Bruno Guimaraes to tap in, sealing a 4-1 victory.
