OSV-96 rifle
The OSV-96 rifle series has been equipped with a new cartridge containing high-precision armor-piercing bullets, allowing it to penetrate modern armored personnel carriers of NATO members.
That is the information shared by Mr. Alexey Matveyev of the Central Research and Design Bureau for Sports and Hunting in Tula with the Russian press.
"While standard bullets are multi-element bullets, the bullets in the improved cartridge (of the OSV-96) consist of only one element, that is, they are made from a single piece of solid steel," Matveyev explained.
Mr. Matveyev said that the single-element ammunition has greatly improved the capabilities of the OSV-96 rifle.
Based on test results, the new ammunition is capable of penetrating light armored vehicles at a maximum distance of 2,000 m and armored personnel carriers at a distance of up to 1,500 m.
The cartridge also allows a sniper to stay out of the accurate range of guns carrying standard cartridges.
The OSV-96 is a rifle produced by the Shipunov Instrument Design Bureau (Russia), designed to shoot enemy troops and military equipment at long ranges. Recently, Russia has set a goal of upgrading the capabilities of this rifle to suit modern combat needs.
