Russia threatens to terminate gas supply agreements with Armenia.

GD&TĐ - Russia recently threatened to terminate gas supply agreements with Armenia if the country continues its process of joining the European Union (EU).

"Russia could suspend or unilaterally cancel agreements to supply Armenia with natural gas, petroleum products, and rough diamonds if the country continues its EU accession process," Kommersant wrote, quoting a letter from Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev to the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure on May 25.

In his letter, Tsivilev noted the practical steps being taken to strengthen Armenia's integration with the EU, and that the Armenian government's aspiration to join the bloc threatens the maintenance and development of trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Armenia.

According to the Minister, bilateral international treaties are one of the foundations of this cooperation.

"Armenia's efforts to join the EU are incompatible with the long-standing partnership between the two governments and businesses, based on mutual respect and interests," Tsivilev emphasized.

The official also noted that Russia has repeatedly taken practical steps to meet Armenia's essential needs on a preferential basis.

The issue concerns the tax exemption regime for these goods, which Russia implemented in 2013. According to the article, Russia now considers this regime unfeasible and is threatening Armenia by freezing or canceling bilateral agreements.

Analysts warn that the consequence is that Armenia could not only lose its preferential treatment on Russian gas and oil products, but also find itself in a difficult situation due to the challenge of replacing its Russian supply sources.
