Children's Hospital 2 ( Ho Chi Minh City) has successfully treated a case of severe kidney injury in a child using a conservative method, avoiding the risk of surgical removal of the kidney.
The patient is a 7-year-old boy from Dong Nai province. While playing with friends in class, he unfortunately slipped and fell, hitting his right hip hard against the corner of the teacher's podium. After the accident, the child experienced significant pain in his lower back and developed hematuria (blood in his urine), so he was taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
The CT scan revealed that the child had suffered a right kidney injury and was quickly transferred to Children's Hospital 2 for further treatment.
Here, doctors noted that the hematuria persisted, and the red blood cell count continued to decrease, indicating that the kidney was still bleeding. The child received an emergency blood transfusion and was given a strict conservative treatment protocol requiring complete immobilization, minimal movement, and close monitoring of vital signs.
Thanks to timely intervention, the bleeding was gradually brought under control, the kidney stopped bleeding on its own, and recovered well without surgery.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Pham Ngoc Thach, Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 2, kidney injury is one of the most common solid organ injuries in children, mainly due to falls, bicycle accidents, or collisions during play. Currently, conservative treatment is prioritized to preserve as much kidney function as possible for children. However, patients need to be closely monitored at a medical facility with adequate resuscitation equipment because the risk of hemorrhagic shock can still occur.
Doctors advise parents to pay attention when children suffer strong impacts to the abdomen, hips, or lower back. If persistent pain or blood in the urine occurs, the child should be taken to a specialized medical facility for timely examination. Under no circumstances should you self-medicate or use home remedies.
