Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he could not confirm a direct phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump.
However, Mr. Peskov said that Moscow and Washington still maintain dialogue through various diplomatic channels.
On February 8, the New York Post published an interview with Mr. Trump, in which the head of the White House revealed that he had a phone conversation with President Putin.
The New York Post , however, did not provide any excerpts from the call, and Mr Trump also declined to say how many times he had contacted the Russian leader.
Commenting on the New York Post 's report, Mr. Peskov said he neither confirmed nor denied the phone call between the two leaders.
"While the administration in Washington is expanding its activities, there will be different media and it will be carried out on different channels. In that context, I personally may not know something. So in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny," Mr. Peskov said.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly declared that he would quickly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict and also said that he is ready to meet President Putin.
For his part, the Russian leader also signaled that he was "open" to potential talks, saying he had maintained a "pragmatic" relationship with his US counterpart during Mr Trump's first term.
Although Mr. Trump has yet to publicly release details of his peace plan for Ukraine, reports suggest it would include freezing the conflict along the current front lines, establishing a demilitarized zone patrolled by European troops and halting efforts to push Ukraine to join NATO.
Meanwhile, Russia has ruled out freezing the conflict and stressed that the conditions of a peace deal must ensure Ukraine's "commitment to permanent neutrality, demilitarization and de-fascism as well as recognition of territorial realities on the ground".
