According to RT on June 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was preparing for a third round of negotiations with Kiev, emphasizing that the talks would focus on proposed agreements to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

Putin made the remarks in Minsk after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council. When asked about when the third round of talks with Ukraine might take place, Putin said the heads of the two negotiating delegations are in regular contact and have telephone conversations.

The Kremlin chief added that draft proposals from both Russia and Ukraine would form the basis for the next round of talks, the time and venue of which still needed to be agreed.

“These are two completely contradictory documents. But that is exactly the purpose of the negotiations – to try to narrow the gap. In my opinion, the fact that they are contradictory is not surprising. I do not want to go into details, because I believe that it is neither appropriate nor useful to talk about the negotiations in advance,” President Putin stressed.

During the previous round of direct talks in Istanbul, Turkey, earlier this month, Russian and Ukrainian delegations exchanged memoranda outlining their respective views on a roadmap to a peace deal and agreed to exchange prisoners of war. Moscow also unilaterally decided to repatriate the bodies of the dead Ukrainian soldiers as a humanitarian gesture.

Russian President Putin thanked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for supporting the talks and expressed hope that Ankara would stick to its position. "We are ready to hold talks in Istanbul," Putin said.
