“Kyiv has not suffered such a fierce attack since spring,” Mr. Popko wrote on his Telegram channel.
He said that groups of drones were flying towards Kyiv “from different directions” and soon several missiles were launched at the city from Tu-95MS strategic bombers.
He also said that the air defense force shot down more than 20 "objects from the enemy side".
The Kyiv city military administration said two men, aged 26 and 36, were killed and three others were injured to varying degrees by falling debris. Two of the injured were hospitalized.
Fire and rescue services were working at rubble sites in the Darnitsky and Shevchenkivskiy districts early Wednesday, the Kyiv mayor said.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian television station Suspilne reported several explosions in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa early Wednesday, after the region's military governor Oleh Kiper warned of Russian missile strikes and advised residents to stay in shelters.
