Dr. Pham Hong Khoa, Head of the Quan Su Examination Department, K Hospital, said that patient Le Thi H. (49 years old, residing in An Duong district, Hai Phong city) came to the hospital for examination with a tumor in her chest that was bleeding, painful, ulcerated, causing infection, and had a "huge" size of more than 20 cm in diameter. Doctors requested emergency hospitalization.
According to the patient, she had touched and discovered an abnormal mass in her right breast a long time ago. However, due to subjectivity and fear because she had not married or had children, Ms. H. let the tumor progress for more than 3 years. When she went to K Hospital for examination, the doctor was afraid that the tumor was bleeding, the size of a cabbage, just looking at it, one could imagine the difficulty in the patient's daily life.
Ms. H. was diagnosed with a fibroadenoma of the right breast, a large tumor with a diameter of about 20cm (more than 3kg), causing the right breast to sag. The doctors consulted and recommended a complete removal of the right breast to avoid spreading infection. According to Dr. Pham Hong Khoa, if not operated on early, the tumor can rupture, ulcerate severely, threatening the patient's health and psychology.
The surgery was successful. The immediate biopsy result was a grade 1 phyllodes tumor of the breast. This is a rare tumor that develops in the connective tissue of the breast, and is pleomorphic. Therefore, to determine whether the patient's tumor is benign or malignant, doctors will perform additional biopsies on other locations on the tumor to determine the next treatment direction for the patient.
Dr. Khoa said that phyllodes tumor of the breast is a special disease of the breast, can develop very quickly, easily recur, and easily increase in malignancy. Phyllodes tumor has 3 grades: benign phyllodes tumor; borderline phyllodes tumor and malignant phyllodes tumor.
Through the case of Ms. Le Thi H., doctors at K Hospital recommend that women should proactively prevent the disease by regularly monitoring their health status. Women should also regularly perform self-examination for abnormalities that appear on their bodies, promptly go to the hospital and see a doctor to detect and treat problems related to the mammary glands.
