Hai Phong is gradually realizing its goal of becoming a medical center in the Northern coastal region.
Great strides
Since the success of the first kidney transplant in June 2023, up to now, with the technical support of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital has successfully performed 7 kidney transplants. The mastery of advanced and difficult techniques by doctors and nurses of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital marks a great turning point in the expertise, organization, level and reputation of the hospital.
According to hospital statistics, the number of patients with chronic kidney failure in Hai Phong is currently quite high. Every year, the hospital has about 300 - 400 patients out of 200,000 patients with chronic kidney failure who need continuous dialysis.
Continuous dialysis has a great impact on health and causes economic losses to patients. Therefore, the successful application of kidney transplantation in treatment brings the opportunity for many patients with end-stage renal failure to return to normal life. Not only that, the regular implementation of this technique at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital creates opportunities for patients with chronic renal failure to have more convenient access to advanced techniques right in the locality, without having to transfer to a higher level or travel far.
Similarly, Hai Phong Eye Hospital received the transfer and successfully performed corneal transplant techniques on 8 patients. Mr. VDH, from Kien Hung commune, suffered from a cataract in his left eye due to trauma and had to undergo cataract surgery… He was very touched and grateful for the efforts and dedication of the medical team, doctors and experts who “restored the light” to his life.

After more than 1 year of receiving endovascular thermal intervention (laser/RF) technique to treat chronic lower limb venous insufficiency from the Central Geriatric Hospital, Hai Duong General Hospital has successfully performed many cases. The time to perform a case of venous insufficiency treatment with this laser technique only lasts from 40 - 50 minutes, the patient is discharged the same day instead of 5 - 6 days as before. Along with that, dozens of techniques transferred from central hospitals are being routinely performed by Hai Duong General Hospital, helping the hospital catch up with the trend, gradually improving the quality of medical examination and treatment services.
With a modern and synchronous infrastructure, machinery and basic medical equipment, Hai Duong Children's Hospital basically meets the requirements of care and treatment. Currently, the hospital has a series of advanced and modern diagnostic imaging systems such as: CT scan, digital X-ray, cardiovascular ultrasound... The hospital also has a system of bacterial culture machines for antibiotic resistance testing, a PCR system to support early diagnosis of virus-related diseases. Other treatment equipment such as high-function ventilators, incubators... are relatively complete.
Hai Duong Children's Hospital is the first provincial hospital to deploy single-incision laparoscopic appendectomy, which shortens the surgery time, minimizes the invasion of the body, reduces pain for the patient, helps the patient regain consciousness sooner, and only takes 5-7 days to recover...
Recently, according to the decision of the Department of Health, the city spent nearly 358 billion VND to purchase medical equipment to serve 4 hospitals in the West of Hai Phong including: Hai Duong General Hospital, Hai Duong Lung Hospital, Hai Duong Children's Hospital, Hai Duong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. There are 17 bidding packages deployed this time to purchase medical equipment such as X-ray machines, CT scanner systems and magnetic resonance imaging systems; ultrasound machines, operating room equipment, anesthesia, emergency resuscitation, endoscopy systems of all kinds, surgical instruments, testing, pathology, treatment and rehabilitation...
Strategic development orientation
Not only developing many difficult techniques, new and specialized techniques, the medical infrastructure is also invested and upgraded such as: Bach Long Vi Military and Civilian Medical Center, Thuy Nguyen District General Hospital Phase 1, Tien Lang District Medical Center, former Vinh Bao District General Hospital... The non-public medical system is developing rapidly with Hai Phong - Vinh Bao International General Hospital, International Obstetrics and Pediatrics General Hospital, Gold Star General Hospital, Hanoi - Hai Phong Eye Hospital, Vietnam - Russia International Eye Hospital Hai Phong...
The city also has many outstanding mechanisms and policies to improve the capacity of the health sector, such as the Project "Improving the capacity of the public health system in Hai Phong city by 2030" including 6 groups of tasks, 9 groups of solutions, with a total budget of nearly 5,600 billion VND in the period 2024 - 2030. Resolution No. 10 of the City People's Council stipulates specific policies on supporting training, remuneration, and human resources in the health sector in Hai Phong city for the period 2024 - 2030, with a total budget of more than 315 billion VND...

The action program for the period 2025 - 2030 of the city's health sector sets out the goal of building and developing Hai Phong city into a health center of the Northern coastal region. By 2030, Hai Phong city's health system will be modern, high-quality, and effective, meeting the increasing health care and protection needs of the people of the city and the Northern coastal region.
To gradually achieve the set goals, the city's health sector is focusing on promoting digital transformation, building and perfecting a smart healthcare platform with three main pillars: smart disease prevention; smart medical examination and treatment and smart healthcare management, as well as developing remote medical examination and treatment applications and online health consultation.
Regarding the health care network, the city continues to strongly develop the hospital system at all levels; develop a number of specialized, key, high-tech medical fields, especially striving to be the leader in the country in maritime medicine. Combine modern medicine with traditional medicine, military medicine with civilian medicine to improve the service capacity of the entire city's health care system. Encourage investment in developing non-public hospitals, prioritizing high-tech services, modern medical examination and treatment technology, striving to reach 19 doctors/10,000 people; 43 hospital beds/10,000 people by 2030.
In addition, the health sector focuses on consolidating and firmly developing the grassroots health system. In particular, it focuses on improving the quality of services at commune and ward health stations and regional health centers; organizing a health station model towards comprehensive and continuous health care, integrating prevention - treatment - rehabilitation services; organizing management and monitoring of people receiving medical examination and treatment at health stations.
Hai Phong aims to have 100% of commune and ward health stations meet national health standards according to the new phase criteria by 2030; the rate of people receiving initial health management and monitoring will reach over 90%; ensuring that each commune health station has at least 2 doctors working regularly. Improve the capacity of the preventive health system, ensure health security, respond to public health emergencies; diversify forms and improve the quality of public health care...
Hai Phong City currently has 19 hospitals, 11 centers, 5 regional general hospitals, 27 regional medical centers with nearly 17,940 people. After the merger, Hai Phong's medical staff has increased significantly in scale and quality. Medical examination and treatment activities after the organization and implementation of the 2-level local government have been basically stable, without affecting the health care of the people.
