That is the open letter of Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School (District 6, Ho Chi Minh City) Dinh Phu Cuong sent to philanthropists and parents of students on the eve of Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20.

The open letter reads: "Every year, on Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20, the school receives many flower baskets and congratulatory cakes. However, these flowers and cakes are only used for one day and then thrown away, which is a waste."

"This year, due to the difficult economic situation after the pandemic, through this open letter, the school respectfully requests that instead of giving flowers and cakes, businesses and parents of students please change to giving health insurance cards for students so that the school can give them to the school's disadvantaged students," according to the open letter.

Currently, the school has recorded 89 disadvantaged students who cannot afford health insurance cards. The value of each health insurance card is 680,400 VND, valid for 12 months of 2024. In the open letter, the school expressed its desire to receive support and sharing from benefactors and parents to help disadvantaged students.

Sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Dinh Phu Cuong said that in previous years, the situation was not so difficult. However, this year, when implementing the collection of student health insurance according to regulations, the school recorded many students with very difficult circumstances (some students have unemployed parents; some are orphans...).

"Every year, the school receives many flowers and congratulatory cakes. Flowers and cakes are beautiful and delicious, but they must be thrown away after one day. Therefore, the school board met and agreed to convert these gifts into health insurance cards for students," said Mr. Cuong.

Principal of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School said that the school was very happy to receive the consensus and support of many agencies, partners and parents.

After 2 days of launching, although the school announced that there were still 89 students who did not have health insurance cards, it received support for up to 200 cards. Therefore, Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School announced to stop the campaign.

Mr. Cuong said that with the remaining cards, the school will ask for opinions to save them and take care of students in difficult circumstances during the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Many parents expressed on the parent forum: The ideas and actions of Nguyen Van Luong Secondary School are very meaningful. Flowers given on holidays are beautiful but also really wasteful. This conversion brings more practical value, taking care of students in difficult circumstances, helping them live healthy to study well. It is also a way to show gratitude to teachers on Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20.
