Nghe An strives to achieve food output of 1.2 million tons in 2024

Spring crop 2023 achieves outstanding results

The Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that with the timely and drastic participation of departments and branches from the province to the locality, the efforts of farmers in intensive investment, application of technical advances and pest control, the spring crop of 2023 achieved outstanding results, the yield of all crops increased compared to the plan and increased compared to the spring crop of 2022.

The output of grain crops in the 2023 spring crop is expected to reach over 1 million tons. Of which, the 2023 spring rice area will reach over 91,200 hectares, with a yield of 68.8 quintals/ha, yielding over 628,200 tons, compared to the plan of 611,500 tons (reaching 102.74%). Corn will be planted on over 20,000 hectares, of which corn for grain will reach over 18,200 hectares with a yield of over 94,100 tons, and corn for biomass will be over 1,800 hectares with a yield of over 71,000 tons. Peanuts in the 2023 spring crop will be planted on 8,492.36 hectares, with a yield of 28.18 quintals/ha, yielding nearly 24,000 tons.

Spring crop production plays an important role, determining the productivity and output of crops and livestock for the whole year. Therefore, identifying the advantages and difficulties for production, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has developed a project to organize crop production in the spring crop of 2024 and livestock development and animal disease prevention in the last 2 months of 2023 and the spring crop of 2024.

Implementing the project, the conference assessed the advantages, difficulties and developments of crop and livestock diseases currently occurring in Nghe An , causing damage and affecting the productivity and output of crops and livestock. Thereby emphasizing that in order to continue the success of the 2023 spring crop, units and localities need to prepare very carefully.

At the conference, leaders of the Department of Crop Production and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine reported on the results of crop production, animal husbandry, veterinary work, and disease prevention in 2023; implementation directions in the last two months of 2023 and the spring crop of 2024.

Notably, African swine fever is currently developing quite complicatedly with 93 outbreaks in small-scale farms, less than 21 days in 15 districts, cities and towns. Since the beginning of 2023, there have been 149 outbreaks with nearly 7,000 pigs having to be destroyed. In addition, other diseases in crops and livestock such as avian influenza, lumpy skin disease in cattle... In 2023, more than 30,362 hectares of crops were infected with various pests and diseases, including 25,208 hectares of rice.

At the same time, current events, politics and world economic trends also have a significant impact on agricultural production of the whole country as well as Nghe An.

Striving for food output to reach 1.2 million tons in 2024

After summarizing the results, difficulties and advantages of the 2023 spring crop, the conference proposed directions for implementing crop production in the 2024 spring crop and livestock development and animal disease prevention in the last two months of 2023 and the 2024 spring crop.

Specifically, the target of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector for food output in 2024 is about 1.2 million tons. Note that the summer-autumn crop - season 2024 always faces many difficulties such as weather, pests, low productivity, therefore, the spring crop 2024 must strive to reach 703,625 tons of food to contribute greatly to achieving the overall target of the whole year.

The conference also outlined key solutions for specific implementation in each field, such as: arranging the structure of varieties and seasons for crops, especially rice, corn, peanuts, sugarcane, cassava, and vegetables of all kinds; plant protection, irrigation; field sanitation; application of science and technology, conversion of crop structure, production linkage, etc.

Specifically, pay attention to the work contents on enhancing the application of food safety production processes (VietGAP, organic, ...), applying science and technology in production on crops to gradually build brands, trace the origin of products to increase the value of agricultural products of the province. At the same time, promote the linkage of production and consumption of agricultural products on e-commerce platforms to stabilize and promote production and consumption.

For the People's Committees of districts, cities and towns, on the basis of the Production Project of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, based on the characteristics of terrain, land, climate, intensive production level... of the locality to develop and implement the specific 2024 spring crop production project, close to reality, in order to maximize the available advantages.

At the conference, many high-quality comments emphasized measures to improve the efficiency of agricultural production in Nghe An. Concluding the conference, comrade Phung Thanh Vinh emphasized that in order to strive to achieve the project's goals, units and localities need to focus on developing plans, arranging crop structures, varieties and seasons appropriately, suitable to the specific conditions of each region. Be flexible, decisive and mobilize the entire political system to focus on directing production; maximize exploitation and promote all resources so that the 2024 spring crop reaches the highest level in terms of area, productivity, output, ensuring safe and highly effective production.
