The job of working in the sun and rain to "polish" the road surface

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí09/07/2023

For more than 30 years, Mr. Dao Van Vien (a road patrol worker of Gia Lai Road Management and Repair Joint Stock Company) has always been on national and provincial highways in Gia Lai province to promptly inspect and detect damage and factors that cause traffic insecurity.

Mr. Vien has been a road patrolman since he was 20 years old. At that time, he was assigned to manage hundreds of kilometers on National Highway 19. His task was to regularly check the route, the traffic safety sign system and violations of road corridors, early detection of traffic accidents as well as road damage to report to the authorities for handling and repair.

"This work is done every day, especially during the rainy and stormy season, when road patrols must be increased. The nature of the work requires a sense of responsibility, discipline, and self-awareness because each road patrol officer must always work independently. If they are negligent and fail to detect obstacles on the road in time, the risk of an accident is very high," said Mr. Vien.

Mr. Vien's patrol duty is day and night. Whenever an incident occurs on the route, he quickly puts on his faded shirt and rushes to the scene to coordinate with the authorities to rescue victims or handle obstacles.

For the past 30 years, Mr. Vien has patrolled Highway 19 and then the Truong Son Dong route. Currently, he is assigned more than 30km of the Pleiku City bypass route.

Similarly, Mr. Hoang Van Tu (Pleiku City Road Management Department) was assigned to supervise more than 30km of National Highway 14 ( Ho Chi Minh Road). This is considered a difficult route to manage, due to the heavy traffic volume, passing through densely populated areas.

In particular, on National Highway 14, many serious traffic accidents frequently occur, with many hot spots for traffic safety violations.

Mr. Tu recalled: "Recently, there was an accident at La Son intersection on Sunday. At that time, a passenger bus crashed into a house, causing many deaths. When I heard the news, I left my friend's wedding to go to the scene, grasp the situation and help rescue the victims. In another case, I went to coordinate with people to dismantle temporary houses that violated traffic safety corridors, but was threatened to be beaten and chased with a knife."

"Road patrol officers often work silently, few people know that we are coordinating to monitor and manage. To promptly grasp information and incidents on the road, we always give our phone numbers to people and authorities so that when necessary, we can report the incident," said Mr. Tu.

Although he has only been working as a road patrolman for more than 4 years, Mr. Do Ngoc Anh (a worker at Chu Se Road Management Department) is not afraid of difficulties and always focuses on doing a good job of patrolling to promptly detect any incidents on the road.

The agency assigned Mr. Anh to manage a 46km section of National Highway 25, spanning Phu Thien and Chu Se districts. This section of road has 4km of Chu Se pass with many winding curves. On this route, bad guys often take advantage of the dark to steal and destroy traffic safety corridors, so the staff often have to patrol from night to dawn.

"This job often requires us to brave the rain, wind, storms and floods, regardless of day or night on the road. However, the salary and benefits are not commensurate, the average income is from 3 to 6 million VND/month. I also hope that there will be policies and support to increase the income of the road patrol brothers to ensure their lives," said Mr. Anh.

Mr. Tran Van Thac, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gia Lai Road Management and Repair Joint Stock Company, informed: "Currently, we have 20 people managing more than 700km of roads in the province. On average, each person is in charge of about 30km to promptly report on incidents of damaged road surfaces, traffic signs, collapsed manhole covers, unsafe underground works, and traffic congestion accidents on the managed roads."

"This is a hard job, with many potential dangers, but the income is still low. The staff are the "eyes and ears" for us to promptly grasp accidents and incidents on the roads. Whether the roads are safe and traffic is smooth or not depends on the silent contributions of these road patrol staff," Mr. Thac emphasized.
