Artist Quang Minh returns to Vietnam to celebrate Tet with... a new role

Artist Quang Minh was born in 1959, studied in the 6th class (1981-1984) of the School of Stage Arts 2 (now Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Cinema), along with famous artists such as Hong Dao, Hong Van, Huu Chau, Huu Nghia... After graduating, Quang Minh became the main actor of the Kim Cuong Drama Troupe, then the Bong Hong Troupe. In 1990, he moved to the US with his family, worked as a comedian on many overseas stages, and also dubbed for Hong Kong dramas...

Quang Minh and drama artist Hong Dao got married in 1995 and had 2 daughters. In 2019, after 24 years of living together, Hong Dao - Quang Minh divorced. Although they are no longer together in life and career, they still respect each other. Quang Minh said that he is currently more active in the arts in Vietnam, still lives alone, and has not found new happiness. With his role in the film The Price of Happiness (directed by Nguyen Ngoc Lam), which will be released in theaters at the end of April, artist Quang Minh said it was an impressive role even though it was not the main or secondary role (he played a smooth-talking, polished-looking man who loved to dress up). The film's content was very realistic, combined with the names of Xuan Lan (producer), director Nguyen Ngoc Lam (known since working in the US), so when invited, Quang Minh immediately nodded in agreement.

"Director Ngoc Lam chose this role for me from the beginning because he thought it was suitable. My role is not the main one in the film, but each time I appear, it will be the highlight and key to the film's content. Currently, I am very afraid that my acting style will be repetitive, so in each project I try to find a difference to impress the audience. I am still very passionate about this profession!", Quang Minh shared.

Quang Minh is happy that after 34 years away from home, he can fully celebrate Tet in Vietnam.

This Tet, Quang Minh said that for the first time he was able to enjoy a full Tet, experiencing it throughout Vietnam after 34 years of living away from home. He said: "Previously, I often returned before or after Tet, because my children in the US did not have time off from school, and the work schedules of family members in the US were not suitable for a long stay. In the US, I lived in an area with a large Vietnamese population. They organized bustling fairs; on the 30th of Tet, firecrackers exploded in the sky. On the first day of the year, many Vietnamese families in the US often dress their children in Ao Dai, wish them a happy new year, and give them lucky money to preserve the tradition of Tet. I am looking forward to enjoying the traditional Tet atmosphere this year in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tet holidays always make me feel mixed emotions. At this age, I live with many memories. I will also go to the market to buy flowers and food to cook offerings to my grandparents and ancestors. I am like my parents when they were alive, even though I am alone, I still have to prepare a complete altar. On the 30th of Tet, I will wear Ao Dai and go to the temple to pray for health and luck."

Quang Minh shared that the thing he regrets the most is constantly promising his parents that he would return to Vietnam for Tet, but before he could do so, his grandparents passed away. Recently, Quang Minh returned to Can Duoc (Long An) to visit his parents' graves and confided: "It seems like just yesterday, looking back today, it has been more than 10 years since I left my parents. But I always believe that my grandparents are always there to bless their children and grandchildren to be healthy and safe."

This Tet, Quang Minh said he is very happy to meet the audience directly in some plays at Truong Hung Minh stage (in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City) by artists Minh Nhi and Viet Huong.

Quang Minh shared more joy this year that he connected and still considers Hong Dao as friends: "In October 2023, I visited Dao's house in the US. Dao asked: 'Do you want to eat or drink anything?', just like that, I was so happy I wanted to cry. Before, I was very sad because I could not give my two children a full life with their parents by their side, I felt guilty for causing emotional pain to my children. Now I understand that everything in life is fate, things happen for a reason.

I am happy that Hong Dao has roles that are praised and accepted by the audience, such as the supporting role in Tran Thanh's film Mai . I feel happy, proud and honored about Hong Dao. Recently, I told Dao that Viet Huong and Minh Nhi invited me to act in a play. Dao supported me and advised me to try it for fun. When I heard her say that, I immediately agreed." Quang Minh also admitted that, up to now, he has not found anyone who acts as well on stage as Hong Dao.
