Upon request, Detective Yan and 1-2 colleagues brought lights, night vision goggles, nets and cages to catch stray pets.
As pet ownership has increased in recent years in China, the profession of pet detectives specializing in finding missing pets has also flourished.
Most pet detectives work alone or with a few colleagues. They charge between $420 and $4,200 per case, depending on how difficult it is to find or rescue the missing pet.
"Logical analysis and reasoning skills are very important. There are many ways to do a task," said Yan Zhiyon, a pet detective in China's Henan province. Most of the requests he receives are for dogs and cats.
During one search, Yan received a call from a family who had lost their pet cat living on the seventh floor of an apartment building. He said the first thing the team had to do when they arrived at the apartment was to assess whether the cat had run outside or was somewhere else in the building.

"Following the traces the cat left behind, such as footprints in the hallway and scattered fur, we speculated that it might be between the 7th and 11th floors. Finally, we found the cat on the 8th floor," he said.
In another case, Yan's team found a three-month-old kitten stuck in a ventilation area. They had to have a member with a rope tied around his waist crawl through two 50-centimeter diameter holes to reach the cat.
"The process of searching for pets is very interesting, like the work of a normal detective. You need to pay attention to many details that are often overlooked," Yan said.
According to a report by the China Agricultural Publishing House, there are an estimated 117 million pets kept in urban areas in the country by the end of 2022, up 4% from last year.
Over the past four years, Wu Lilei's pet detective company in Beijing has successfully tracked down 5,000 animals in cities across China.
He added that the cost of searching and rescuing in many cases is much higher than buying a new similar animal, but many people consider pets to be family members. Wu's company only charges a "basic service fee" if the lost animal is not found.
"Our approach varies depending on the species and age of the missing animal. The work is based on the experience of a detective, but more importantly, it is necessary to be familiar with the habits and characteristics of the animal," he said.
