A representative of the Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province recently had a working session with the Institute to study the installation of an early warning system for storms, tornadoes, heavy rains and sea waves.
This is an important move to increase safety for tourists and vehicles operating in Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, especially after the capsize of the Vinh Xanh 58 ship.
The Institute of Earth Sciences has proposed deploying a high-resolution monitoring and warning system for Quang Ninh. The project will use modern equipment, similar to the model that has been effectively deployed in Hanoi since mid-September 2019.
Previously, implementing the sub-project "Establishing an enhanced monitoring system and a short-term, ultra-short-term high-resolution forecasting and warning system for thunderstorms, heavy rains and urban flooding in Hanoi to serve economic development and ensure social security", the Institute of Earth Sciences has established and maintained a modern and synchronous high-resolution monitoring system for clouds, thunderstorms and heavy rains.
The equipment system includes 2 X-band radars, 8 electric field measuring stations, 2 automatic meteorological stations, 10 automatic rain measuring stations, 1 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), 1 cloud ceiling measuring station, 8 global positioning satellite signal receiving stations, and 3 lightning warning stations.
According to the Institute of Earth Sciences, the modern monitoring system has been enhanced to provide important input data for the forecasting and warning system for heavy rain and urban flooding in Hanoi. At the same time, an advanced model system for forecasting and warning heavy rain and urban flooding has been established, bringing products to end users to enhance the initiative of the community and managers in preventing natural disasters related to thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flooding in the Hanoi area.
It is known that the People's Committee of Quang Ninh province has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ninh province to carry out the steps to develop the project and advise the People's Committee to issue an investment policy. The system will be deployed in key tourist areas in Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay and coastal areas with the requirement to ensure speed, timeliness and accuracy.
