Research on construction plan of Ngo Quyen temple

Hanoi is the hometown of National Hero Ngo Quyen, and at the same time, it is also the place where Ngo Quyen chose to establish his capital. To celebrate the 1080th anniversary of Ngo Quyen's coronation and establishment of the capital in Co Loa, there have been many activities to show gratitude and affirm the contributions of the person who founded the country's independence. Responding to the wishes of the people and scientists, the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center to study the plan to build a temple to worship Ngo Quyen at the Co Loa relic site.

After nearly 1,000 years of Chinese domination, the 10th century was a pivotal moment in the cause of regaining independence and autonomy of our nation, marked by the uprisings of Khuc Thua Du and Duong Dinh Nghe. However, it was not until after the victory over the Southern Han army on the Bach Dang River in 938 led by Ngo Quyen that the period of national independence was opened. Notably, while Khuc Thua Du and Duong Dinh Nghe only claimed to be the Governor - an official position of the Northern court governing our country at that time, Ngo Quyen claimed to be King and established the capital in Co Loa. However, recently, some views have "obscured" the role of Ngo Quyen. At the same time, there is a view that Ngo Quyen's homeland is "somewhere between Thanh Hoa - Nghe An". On the occasion of the 1080th anniversary of Ngo Quyen's coronation and establishment of the capital in Co Loa, under the direction of the Hanoi People's Committee, the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center organized the scientific seminar "Ngo Quyen and the cause of national restoration", affirming Ngo Quyen's contributions to the country.

Professor Nguyen Quang Ngoc, Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, said: Recently, some people argued that Ngo Quyen's declaration of himself as King was only " political independence", and there was no national name, territory, or system of government at all levels... However, historical documents clearly state the territory, the decision to establish the capital, and the establishment of Ngo Quyen's independent government. Furthermore, it cannot be denied that the Bach Dang victory had a decisive significance in ending the period of Chinese domination. Ngo Quyen did not establish the capital in Dai La, but in Co Loa to affirm the continuation of the tradition of the Au Lac nation during the time of An Duong Vuong. This is very meaningful, he affirmed national independence at the very place where we lost our country. Scientists all agree that if King Hung was the founder of the country, then Ngo Quyen was the founder of the nation.

Regarding the view on Ngo Quyen's homeland, Associate Professor Nguyen Minh Tuong has provided solid evidence, based on many different historical sources, ethnographic documents, linguistics, and Han Nom. The view that Ngo Quyen's homeland is not in Duong Lam is because some people believe that the name Duong Lam in Son Tay only appeared in 1964, and during Ngo Quyen's time, this name did not exist. In fact, the place name Duong Lam in Son Tay has been recorded in many ancient documents, typically in the book Viet Dien U Linh (in the 14th century) which tells the story of Phung Hung as the god who appeared to help Ngo Quyen fight the Southern Han army. The story in Viet Dien U Linh is based on an oral story in Duong Lam. In addition, many ancient stone steles also mention the place name Duong Lam in Son Tay. Associate Professor Nguyen Minh Tuong emphasized: "In Duong Lam, in addition to historical documents, there are many field documents confirming that this is Ngo Quyen's homeland".

Currently, there are about 60 relics related to Ngo Quyen nationwide, scattered in many provinces and cities. Hanoi currently has four relics. The most important is the Ngo Quyen mausoleum and temple in his hometown Duong Lam village. Nguyen Trong An, Deputy Director of the Duong Lam Ancient Village Relic Management Board, said: “Over the years, the people and the Son Tay town government have always paid attention to and restored the relic cluster related to Ngo Quyen. Here, there are not only the mausoleum and temple, but also many heritages and places related to the life and career of Ngo Quyen in the past. The most famous is the row of ancient duoi trees, which is said to be the place where war elephants of Ngo Quyen's army were tied. Currently, in addition to the management and care of the Ngo Quyen mausoleum and temple carried out by the authorities and the people, teachers and students of Ngo Quyen Secondary School (Son Tay town) in the area take care of the mausoleum. Every year, on anniversaries, students come here to review old traditions, toeducate the spirit of patriotism and the traditions of their ancestors”. Chairman of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Association, Dr. Luu Minh Tri, said that among the four relics worshipping Ngo Quyen in Hanoi, in addition to the mausoleum and temple, some other relics have not received proper investment and attention. Dr. Luu Minh Tri suggested that the city should pay more attention to relics related to people who have made great contributions to the country such as Ngo Quyen.

Hanoi is both the birthplace of Ngo Quyen and the place he chose to establish his capital. However, at the Co Loa relic site (Dong Anh district), there is currently no work honoring his contributions to the struggle to regain national independence. Scientists all believe that the lack of a memorial to Ngo Quyen at Co Loa is a major shortcoming. Responding to the wishes of the people and scientists, on February 11, 2019, the Hanoi People's Committee issued Notice No. 162, assigning the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center to research and build a temple to worship Ngo Quyen at a suitable location. Dr. Nguyen Van Son, former Director of the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, said that he has spent many years researching the Co Loa relic site with scientists. According to him, the location of the temple must be careful, so that it can honor both An Duong Vuong and Ngo Quyen, and is suitable for the common space.
