VTC NewsVTC News04/04/2023

Last week, Sergio Contreras, a former La Liga player, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for drug trafficking. This is not the only case of a football player turning to crime.

With the huge amount of money earned from playing football, most players choose to invest in business activities after retirement, even while still playing. However, not everyone does it legally.

Former player Sergio Contreras faces 16 years in prison.

National player becomes drug criminal

Quincy Promes played for Twente, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Ajax, and made 50 appearances for the Netherlands national team. He was named in the squad for EURO 2021 (playing 2 matches). However, after that tournament, Quincy Promes disappeared from the Dutch squad. The striker became a wanted criminal in his home country.

In June 2020, Quincy Promes was arrested on suspicion of being involved in an international drug ring in the Netherlands and Australia. Police determined that Quincy Promes and his family spent up to 120 million euros to buy 400 kg of crystal meth. The shipment was intercepted in Belgium.

The prosecutor's office has asked for a two-year prison sentence for Quincy Promes for drug trafficking and attempted murder. However, the player did not appear in court. He is not in the Netherlands but is residing in Russia - there is no extradition agreement between the two countries. Quincy Promes has continued to play regularly for Spartak Moscow, appearing in 20 matches in the 2022/23 season and scoring 16 goals in the Russian Premier League.

Like Quincy Promes, Mendes da Silva was also a former Dutch international before being arrested for drug trafficking. The former Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Red Bull Salzburg and Panathinaikos player was arrested in August 2022 on his birthday.

The footballer is suspected of being involved in a drug trafficking ring with thousands of tons of cocaine. Police followed Mendes da Silva as he withdrew a large sum of money from a bank. During the investigation, Mendes da Silva was found to be involved in an illegal betting organization.

Serbian international Dusan Petkovic was involved in a more sophisticated form of drug trafficking through his family business. Petkovic bought bricks from Luxembourg to Serbia, hid the drugs inside and shipped them to Belgium, from where they were distributed across Europe. The former defender was arrested after Europol (European police agency) intercepted a shipment of 115kg of crystal meth and heroin.

Gerrard's old friend Rooney goes to jail

In the UK, during 2019-2021, police dismantled a drug trafficking network after hacking into the criminals’ encrypted messaging system. Many players and former players playing in lower leagues - where incomes are far lower than in the Premier League - were caught.

Layton Maxwell was a classmate who was rated higher than Steven Gerrard in the Liverpool youth team. He scored on his first appearance for the Anfield team in 1999. However, that was the only time Maxwell played for Liverpool before moving to smaller clubs.

Maxwell was arrested in 2020 for his part in a drug trafficking ring after police discovered more than 60kg of crystal meth in the former footballer's warehouse. Remarkably, the criminal organisation rented Maxwell's warehouse - dubbed "Aladdin's Cave" - for just £500 a month. The former Liverpool player was sentenced to eight years in prison.

John Lawless - a footballer who claims to be a childhood friend of Wayne Rooney - was sentenced to 7 years in prison in late 2021. He played for The New Saints - who won the Welsh Championship in 2005 and participated in the Champions League qualifying round. However, Lawless only used football as a cover for his main business, drug trafficking. At the time of his arrest, the former player was still involved in football as a coach of amateur club Prestatyn Town.

Not to be outdone by her male counterparts, England female player Faye Dunn was also involved in a drug trafficking ring that was busted late last year. The former member of the England U19 women's team, after retiring, has become a successful owner of a restaurant and children's playground business, with branches from England to Spain.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for Dunn to do business. She was initially hired as an accountant for the drug ring but gradually became more involved in coordination, trading and money laundering. In 2022, Dunne was arrested at the airport.

In 2015, Vice magazine reported that 147 former footballers were currently in prison for drug-related offences. Most of them were mediocre players who played in the lower leagues of English football and ended their playing careers before the age of 25.
