Ngo Thanh Van stars in Netflix film with two famous Hollywood action women

The actress plays a supporting role with a complex inner life, confronting the female lead played by Charlize Theorn in the movie "The Old Guard 2" which will air on Netflix this summer.

On her personal Facebook page, actress Ngo Thanh Van announced her participation in the movie “The Old Guard 2” (Immortal Warriors 2) released by Netflix, released on July 2. The movie features two famous female action stars Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman in the main and villain roles. Ngo Thanh Van’s role as Quynh is a supporting role but no less important.

“The Old Guard” 1 and 2 are a fantasy action series about a group of immortal mercenaries who have been protecting humanity for centuries. The series is based on the original comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka, who also wrote the series.

In the movie version, famous action star Charlize Theron plays Andy - the team leader and female lead. In part 1, her team successfully overcomes the CIA's trap to rescue an immortal in South Sudan. However, after the mission, Andy gradually loses her immortality, each challenge and encounter is a step closer to death.

At the bottom of the sea, Quynh - an immortal who was imprisoned thousands of years ago for being a witch - harbors a grudge against humanity and her teammate Andy because she believes she has been betrayed. Although she only appears for about 3 minutes out of the 124-minute running time through flashbacks of the characters, she immediately attracts attention.

The Los Angeles Times commented: “Critics and audiences were excited by this character, showing the obsession of being imprisoned in an iron maiden for centuries, constantly dying and coming back to life. Her performance left a deep impression, making viewers eager to see Quynh in the next parts.”

Netflix's Tudum page quoted Ngo Thanh Van: "Being locked in there was painful and terrible for Quynh. Then having to return to a completely strange world ... imagine disappearing for about 10, 20 or 30 years. This is 500 years and everything has changed."

Continuing in Part 2, Quynh and her grudge become one of the two biggest challenges for Andy. The other challenge is Discord - the villain played by the female action star of the movie "Kill Bill" Uma Thurman. Introduced as "The First Immortal," Discord will be the one to shake the foundation and ideals that Andy's group has pursued, challenging even the viewers who have long supported the good group.

In the original comic, Ngo Thanh Van's role was a Japanese woman named Noriko. When she was cast, the actress requested to change her name to Vietnamese and the crew agreed. Screenwriter and comic author Greg Rucka agreed that the name change showed respect and added authenticity to the actress' performance.

Ngo Thanh Van was born in 1979 in Tra Vinh . She followed her mother to Na
Uy settled down before returning to Vietnam to pursue his artistic career. Ngo Thanh Van tried her hand at many fields including singing, fashion and began to break through in acting, notably in the film “Dong mau anh hung” with Johnny Tri Nguyen in 2007.

In the later stages of her career from 2010 to 2022, Ngo Thanh Van switched to production, releasing “Tam Cam: The Untold Story,” “Co Ba Sai Gon,” “Thanh Soi,” and “Hai Phuong.”

In Hollywood, she took the stage name Veronica Ngo, appearing in small roles in notable works such as "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017), "The Creator" (2023) and several other films, all in the action genre.

Charlize Theron (born 1975) and Uma Thurman (1970) both rose to fame in the 90s, playing iconic action roles. Both have won Oscars, Golden Globes, or have been nominated for many other awards.
