People with fatty liver often have these features on their face. If they are also tired and lose weight, they should see a doctor immediately.

Fatty liver disease is becoming more common as obesity and sedentary lifestyles increase. It occurs when too much fat builds up in liver cells. Fatty liver disease often has no early symptoms, but some subtle facial signs can be clues that something is wrong with your liver.

There are two main types of fatty liver disease: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Both damage the liver, but their causes are different.

AFLD is the result of excessive alcohol consumption, while NAFLD is often linked to poor diet, obesity and lack of exercise. Over time, untreated fatty liver can lead to more serious conditions such as fibrosis (scarring of the liver), cirrhosis (severe liver damage) and even liver cancer.

Facial signs alone cannot confirm whether a person has fatty liver disease or not, but they can serve as an early warning. It is important to pay attention to these signs and seek medical attention early if they appear. Here are a few facial changes that can suggest liver problems that no one should ignore.

Yellow eyes and skin

One of the most recognizable signs of liver problems, including fatty liver disease, is jaundice. Jaundice occurs when the liver cannot properly process a substance called bilirubin, which is produced when red blood cells break down.

As a result, bilirubin builds up in the body, causing the whites of the eyes and skin to turn yellow. If you notice this yellowing, it is important to have your liver checked, as it can indicate not only fatty liver disease but also other serious liver conditions.

Small, spider-like veins (spider angioma)

Small, spider-like veins that can appear on the face are called spider angiomas. They occur when small blood vessels near the surface of the skin enlarge, often due to hormonal imbalances caused by liver dysfunction.

While these spider veins can also appear in healthy people, especially during pregnancy, having many of them can indicate liver problems. If you notice a significant increase in these veins, it may be worth discussing them with your doctor.

Eye bags (water retention)

Puffiness around the eyes is another possible sign, although it can be caused by many other factors, such as allergies or lack of sleep. However, if your liver is not healthy, puffiness around the eyes can indicate water retention. This can happen when the liver is not functioning properly.

This symptom alone doesn't confirm liver disease, but it's something to keep in mind if it occurs with other signs of liver trouble.

Changes in skin color (lighter or darker patches)

Liver disease can sometimes cause changes in skin color, such as areas of skin becoming lighter or darker. These color changes may be related to hormone or enzyme imbalances due to liver dysfunction.

This symptom can also be caused by other factors, so it's best to see a doctor to get the exact cause checked.

These facial signs should not be relied on alone to diagnose the disease, but they can be helpful in identifying potential liver problems early. In addition to facial signs, people with fatty liver disease may also experience fatigue, abdominal pain, or unexpected weight loss.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor for a full evaluation, as early detection is key to preventing the disease from progressing.

Fortunately, fatty liver disease can often be managed and even reversed with lifestyle changes. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and being physically active are important steps in preventing and managing fatty liver disease.

By making these changes, you can support your liver health and reduce your risk of more serious complications.
