According to the Ministry of Health , in 2024, the entire health sector will promote the development of traditional medicine, combining modern medicine at many medical examination and treatment facilities. Developing this service is one of the strategic goals, aiming to serve the health care of the whole population more effectively.
Elderly people and office workers seek out Oriental medicine to treat pain, fatigue, and insomnia.
"Office workers" are increasingly facing diseases caused by sedentary work habits such as neck and shoulder pain, herniated discs, sleep disorders, and prolonged stress. Instead of just using drugs or invasive interventions, many people are turning to traditional medicine as a safe supportive treatment that has few side effects and can be maintained for a long time.

Ms. Le Thu H. (45 years old, office worker, Lang ward, Hanoi ) said: “I had neck and shoulder pain, and had trouble sleeping for a long time due to sitting a lot and work stress. After being consulted, I followed electroacupuncture treatment combined with herbal baths. After a few weeks, my condition improved significantly, I slept better, and my neck and shoulders were no longer stiff. In addition to treatment, the doctor also gave me instructions on lifestyle and nutrition adjustments.”
According to doctors, people should not wait until they are seriously ill before approaching Oriental medicine. Many traditional medical techniques such as massage, acupuncture, health care, and medicinal soaking can be applied as part of proactive health care, especially for middle-aged and elderly people.
Mr. Nguyen Van T. (Hai Ba Trung Ward, Hanoi), who has spinal degeneration, shared: “I used to take Western medicine but it did not cure me completely. Since the beginning of this year, I have been receiving regular treatment with acupuncture, combined with herbal steaming as prescribed by the doctor. After a few sessions, my body feels lighter and I no longer have insomnia like before.”

The implementation of on-demand clinics and investment in new facilities for traditional medicine helps patients, especially the elderly, have easier access to appropriate treatment services. This is a step forward to improve treatment effectiveness, increase patient experience and satisfaction, and affirm the position of Traditional Medicine in the modern medical examination and treatment system.
Oriental medicine treatment accelerates to meet practical needs
In the first 6 months of 2025, the Department of Traditional Medicine, Friendship Hospital recorded a clear increase in the number of procedures compared to the same period last year, reflecting the increasing interest of patients in traditional medicine treatment methods.
The total number of procedures performed increased by 18.5% (from 48,460 to 57,405 cases). Of which, the group of type II procedures such as electroacupuncture, auricular acupuncture, and hydroacupuncture, which are often applied in the treatment of chronic diseases, increased by nearly 18.4%, from more than 32,000 to nearly 38,000.
Previously, the department performed an average of 5,000 procedures per month, but the current number has reached 10,000-12,000 procedures, showing the increasing demand of the people.

Type I (thread implantation) and type III (medicinal fumigation, foot bath) procedures also increased by about 8.7% and 18.9%, respectively. This increase shows that Oriental medicine continues to maintain its role in supporting treatment, especially for groups of diseases that require long-term treatment, need to improve motor function, and reduce pain and fatigue symptoms.
Dr. Vu Ngoc Vuong, Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine, Friendship Hospital, said: “In recent years, the number of patients choosing to combine traditional medicine treatment has increased significantly. On average, the department performed about 5,000 procedures per month before, but the current number has reached 10,000-12,000 procedures/month, showing the increasing demand of the people.

“The Friendship Hospital mainly serves the elderly, a group with a high rate of chronic diseases. However, to meet the increasingly diverse needs of society, traditional medicine at the hospital is also widely applied to young people, especially office workers, a group that is increasingly facing many musculoskeletal diseases, stress, and insomnia due to the nature of their work,” Dr. Vu Ngoc Vuong shared.
The average total number of inpatient days increased (from 11.63 to 12.87 days), showing a trend of patients receiving more in-depth and longer treatment according to professional instructions.
In the context of chronic diseases becoming increasingly common in the elderly and young people, Oriental medicine is considered a suitable choice, especially in cases requiring long-term supportive treatment, improving quality of life and rehabilitation.
