The people of Tơ Tung hope for investment in water supply projects.

(GLO) - Every dry season, the people of To Tung commune (Gia Lai province) face the problem of water shortage for daily life and production. This situation has lasted for many years, affecting the lives and livelihoods of thousands of households.

To Tung commune currently has over 7,698 hectares of agricultural land, of which about 3,000 hectares require regular irrigation. The remaining 266 hectares of paddy fields are still largely dependent on rainwater.

During the peak of the dry season, many areas lack sufficient irrigation water, forcing people to reduce their cultivated area or only produce one crop per year.

Notably, in the Talop and Hbang fields, with a total area of over 147 hectares, water shortages are a persistent problem. These are important rice-producing areas of the commune, but due to the lack of a reliable water source, people mainly only cultivate one crop per year.

Mr. Dinh Tai (Kuk Tung village) said that his family grows rice, cassava, and corn, but production is always hampered by water shortages. The prolonged dry season causes poor crop growth, and many areas cannot be planted.

"The people hope the government will pay attention to investing in irrigation projects to ensure a stable water supply for irrigation. When people have control over their water sources, they will have the conditions to expand production, diversify crops, and increase their income," said Mr. Tai.

Not only is there a shortage of water for production, many villages in To Tung commune also face a shortage of water for daily use during the dry season. In recent years, the well water sources of many households have frequently run dry, not to mention that many wells are contaminated with alum and lime.

In Kuk Tung village, Mr. Dinh Bac's family well is now almost dry. Every day, his family has to draw small buckets of water from the well to let it settle, filter, and store for later use.

Mr. Bac said: "During the rainy season, there's more water, but it's still contaminated with alum, so it's mainly used for bathing and washing. In the dry season, the well dries up, and I have to go far away to fetch water from a stream. I hope that a centralized clean water project will be built soon so that life will be less difficult."

The commune of Tơ Tung currently has 2,675 households with over 10,650 inhabitants, but lacks a centralized water supply system. This situation not only creates difficulties in daily life but also poses a potential risk to hygiene and safety.

In response to this urgent need, the People's Committee of To Tung commune surveyed and developed an investment project to build the Ka Tung irrigation dam and reservoir in Dak Po Kao village. According to the proposed plan, the project will utilize water from the Ka Tung stream to construct a reservoir with a capacity of approximately 2 million cubic meters; simultaneously, it will invest in a synchronized canal system to ensure irrigation water for about 1,000 hectares of agricultural land downstream along the Eastern Truong Son Road, including approximately 266 hectares of rice paddies.

In addition, a centralized water supply plant with a capacity of approximately 1,000 m³/day will also be built here to serve the domestic water needs of the people in 8 villages in the area.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Tho, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of To Tung commune, said: "Through field surveys, the locality has realized that investing in irrigation works and a centralized water supply plant is extremely necessary."

If the project is approved, it will contribute to ensuring irrigation water for expanding production areas, improving farming efficiency, and enhancing the lives of people in the area.”
