Thanks to the drastic participation and synchronous solutions of local authorities at all levels, many farmers in Thai Nien commune, Bao Thang district have boldly converted ineffective land areas with rice and corn to grow crops such as custard apple, grapefruit, etc. In reality, these models have brought much higher economic value, everyone is excited. These models have opened up a new direction in economic development, contributing to increasing production value and agricultural product value per unit of cultivated area.
Mr. Do Van Son, Chairman of Thai Nien Commune People's Committee, Bao Thang District, said that in recent times, we have focused on promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to actively introduce high-quality crop varieties into production, gradually forming concentrated fruit growing areas in a sustainable direction, thereby gradually increasing the value of agricultural products, contributing to increasing income and reducing poverty in the locality.
The pioneers and successful ones in converting crops in Thai Nien commune include the family of Ms. Than Thi Phuong in Muc village. Ms. Phuong's family is one of the typical households growing fruit trees in Thai Nien commune. Ms. Phuong shared: Realizing that growing fruit trees brings economic efficiency, my family invested in renovating the hill garden to expand the area for growing grapefruit, lychee, etc.
It is known that Ms. Phuong's family has been growing grapefruit on this land for more than two decades. Currently, her family's grapefruit garden has about 60 dozen trees, mainly growing Muc grapefruit and Dien grapefruit. On average, Ms. Phuong's family earns about 60 - 70 million VND from grapefruit each year. In addition, her family also grows about 120 Thanh Ha hybrid lychee trees, with an average of about 4 tons of fruit per crop, earning nearly 100 million VND.

Like Ms. Phuong's family, Mr. Le Van Hoan's family in Bau village, Thai Nien commune has boldly converted ineffective land areas to grow custard apples, which bring high economic value. Currently, his family has about 200 custard apple trees that are nearly ten years old. According to Mr. Hoan, in previous years, his family only grew custard apples in the main season, earning about 40-50 million VND per year.
Later, he found that many places growing custard apples off-season brought 2-3 times higher value than growing custard apples in the main season, so he decided to go to Phong Nien commune to learn about the model of growing custard apples off-season, then apply it to his family's model..."For custard apples off-season to have high yield and quality, custard apple growers need to strictly follow the technical process of caring for the custard apple trees right after the main harvest ends. Growing custard apples off-season does not require complicated requirements or techniques. However, the main factors are pollination time and favorable weather to give high yield and good fruit quality," Mr. Hoan shared. On average, 2 custard apple crops a year bring his family nearly 150 million VND, after deducting expenses, they still save about 110 million VND.

Currently, Thai Nien commune has more than 200 households converting crop structure, focusing on converting rice fields to growing vegetables, colors, and fruit trees, with a total area of 186 hectares. According to local people's calculations, each hectare of vegetables and colors brings in revenue from 138 - 160 million VND. Currently, the commune's concentrated commodity production area has been formed with more than 25 hectares of vegetables and colors; 37 hectares of tea; nearly 300 hectares of fruit trees, of which about 80% of hectares are main fruit trees such as grapefruit, custard-apple... In 2021, the commune's "Muc grapefruit" brand was upgraded from 3 stars to 4 stars.
Mr. Do Van Son, Chairman of Thai Nien Commune People's Committee added: Focusing on sustainable fruit tree development has contributed to increasing product value, helping farmers in Thai Nien Commune, Bao Thang District to gradually increase their income and expand their consumption markets; people can confidently develop production and stick with these key crops. Thereby contributing to promoting agricultural production according to the value chain, associated with new rural construction in the locality.
“In the coming time, to further increase the value of fruit trees and create a concentrated commodity production area, we will continue to encourage people to renovate and intensify existing areas to improve the productivity and quality of fruit orchards in the area. Focus on training and transferring science and technology to households; encourage people to put fruit trees with high economic value into production…”, Mr. Son added.

In addition, with the hilly land area, Thai Nien commune orients people to develop forestry trees. Currently, the planned area for forestry production of the commune is 6,500 hectares, accounting for 68% of the natural area, of which forest land reaches nearly 6,000 hectares. In the commune, forest product purchasing and processing establishments have also developed strongly (6 establishments), facilitating the consumption of planted forest wood.
The economy from afforestation and forest product processing has also contributed significantly to creating regular jobs for local workers, increasing income for people in the commune.
In the coming time, Thai Nien commune will continue to closely follow the district and province's projects in agricultural development orientation, expanding high-tech models, models of linking vegetable and fruit tree cultivation... contributing to increasing income and sustainable poverty reduction for people.
