Soon, iOS and Android users will be able to send RCS (Rich Communication Services) messages to each other securely with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). This is a big step forward in improving the security of messages between different platforms.
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an upgraded messaging protocol for Android, supporting HD photo sending, video calling, location sharing, helping to narrow the gap with other platforms. In particular, when messaging between Android and iOS users, it now displays similar emojis when done on the same platform as iMessage.
GSMA – the organization behind the RCS standard – has updated the new protocol based on Messaging Layer Security (MLS). This allows Apple and Google to ensure that messages between iPhone and Android are encrypted, helping users communicate more securely.

Previously, Google Messages supported E2EE, but only when both users were using the app. Meanwhile, Apple added RCS support to iOS 18 last year, but it didn't include end-to-end encryption across platforms. With the upcoming update, Apple will officially support E2EE across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS.
The GSMA has partnered with Apple, Google, and carriers to implement the new RCS standard. Both tech giants are excited about the move and are committed to providing a more secure messaging experience for users.
This change will make RCS a strong alternative to traditional SMS/MMS, while also bridging the gap between the iOS and Android ecosystems when it comes to messaging.
