According to TechCrunch , the Jio Platforms platform of Asia's richest billionaire, chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani, recently launched a virtual desktop service for digital set-top box users.
Called JioPC, the service offers a cloud-based PC experience through Jio's set-top box, which comes free with a home broadband subscription or can be purchased separately for $64 .
The service is currently available for free trial through a waitlist. Users in India can access the virtual desktop on their TV by plugging in a keyboard and mouse after receiving an invitation and setting up their account.
Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research , said JioPC is a very effective way for the Mumbai-based company to increase its user base, which currently stands at 488 million.
About 70% of Indian households have a TV, but only 15% own a PC, according to Pathak. However, Jio Platforms will likely need to market and educate users about the service.
“You need to convince people that it is still possible to use a PC on a TV using a set-top box,” Pathak said.
According to government data, India’s active digital pay-TV set-top box user base has reached nearly 57 million. However, the traditional direct-to-home (DTH) TV market is shrinking as more users shift to internet services. The active DTH subscriber base declined 8% year-on-year as of March 2024, data showed.
